How can Doom Eternal be so easy to run?

So I started playing Doom Eternal about a week ago, and I had the same surprise from when I had played the first one not long after launch date. It is so easy to drive on ultra settings 3440x1440 that my fps is skyrocketing when I don't limit it to 120 (fps is considerably higher than other games on my computer), and it makes me wonder what gives. Are the textures not so heavy or what?

PS.: My pc specs are available on my profile.

Because DOOM is running with Vulkan's API, and for what I understand, this is such an underated API, because it's very well optimised, is just running super great and pretty much anything, really.

I see. Do you know any other examples of mainstream games running Vulkan? I'd like to give if a try later depending on what's out there.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
Red Dead Redemption 2
GRID Autosport ( old but great game )
Star Citizen
Rise of the Tomb Raider
A good part if not all of Wolfenstein titles, I think ?
Doom 2016 ( obviously )
Need for Speed: No Limits

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_Vulkan_games
Their are probably more than that, but I don't really know much about Vulkan to be fair.

Interesting. Wolfenstein runs super easy too, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is like trying to drag a dead horse through the swamp. Proves that using Vulkan alone is not enough to do the trick.

Not enough, but it's helping a lot, for what I can see.

In my opinion it's 2 major reasons

1. It's a well optimised game just like the Doom 2016 one.

2. You have a beast of system dude 9900k+2080 ti that's absolutely among the best gaming rig combos you can build.

System Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 @3.40ghz (6C/12T)
  • Motherboard: Asus Prime B450M-K
  • RAM: Corsair LPX 2*8GB DDR4 @3200mhz CL16
  • GPU: Zotac Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 (TU-104 variant) 6GB GDDR6
  • Case: Antec GX202
  • Storage
  • SSD: WD 240GB,
    HDD: Toshiba 1 TB @7200rpm
  • PSU: Corsair CX550 (2017 grey unit)
  • Display(s): BenQ 22 inches monitor, 1080p @ 60hz
  • Cooling: 3 Antec case fans 120 mm (2 blue LED front intake and 1 non LED rear exhaust)

True, but 3440x1440 is quite a resolution.  I doubt many games are above 120fps even on a 2080 Ti at that resolution.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)

2080ti can play Doom Eternal at 4k 60fps and visually it looks great too. Wish we had such kinds of optimization in most other AAA titles too.

GTA V I would say runs kind of okay on most hardware if you turn down some settings like grass quality and MSAA.

When I played the first one in 2016, I had a 4790k & 1080, and it ran like a charm as well. I know my rigs were considered high end back then and now, but it's just so far ahead of other games.

You are right. Most AAA games on ultra averages me about 80-120 fps, depending on the title.

It goes considerably higher than 60fps for sure. I have a 4k TV hooked up to my computer as well, so I'll give it a run later today to see what I get out of curiosity.

You should definitely give 4K a try especially since it's pretty much possible for your hardware.

Games that I sit my butt on the couch and play with a controller normally go on the TV, but anything that require precision, such as fps games, is all done on the X34. I wish the jump to the next ultrawide tier wasn't 3x the price though, since I  wanted to play Cyberpunk in HDR.

But you should definitely try some PC games on the 4K monitor to enjoy the high resolution visuals. GTA V should look great too at 4K and it should be pretty doable for your hardware if you turn down some FPS eating settings like grass quality and MSAA.

I'm playing GTA V at 1440p via DSR on my 1080p 60hz monitor I average between 75 to 80 in the urban environments but whenever I move to environments with lots of vegetation it drops in the 50s I have maxed out all settings except MSAA, reflection MSAA, grass quality and the two sliders in advanced settings, motion blur and DOF effects turned off too.

@vinit6694skr As I mentioned before, the fps on 4k goes way beyond your suggested 60fps. The average is 120fps when playing the first mission. I wanted to see this game with a texture pack optimized for cards with 11gb vram. Would look awesome and still play fairly well.

On a side note, with all this horse power I still play so bad that makes me cry.

The big advantage of Vulkan is that it is a lower level API. It has less CPU-overhead (compared to DirectX) and allows to parallelize draw calls (something graphics APIs couldn't do for a long time, which is why most work happens in a single thread). So Vulkan games can scale better on multi-core CPUs (if developers put the effort in).

The flip side of that is that it requires more work from game developers compared to something like DirectX. So it is mostly down to how well optimized the Id-Tech engine is (and how good their developers are at taking full advantage of the API), rather than the API as such.

RDR2 is also an open world game that has a lot of stuff going on, while Doom has mostly linear corridors with limited view range which is a lot easier to optimize for.
