Out of curiosity for the folks who pack heat in their EDC: have you considered wearing first aid gear as well, such as a tourniquet?  It's a reasonable thing for everyone to add to their pockets, but the self defense community is naturally more switched on to the need.  Personally, I'm a pocket nazi so I rarely pack one, but I'm trying to get back into the habit of wrapping it around my belt loop.  I use a RATS tourniquet so it's got a lot of pointy bits that make it hard to position correctly for comfort, though.  Might need to just get a belt attached pouch (NOT A FANNY PACK.  It's EUROPEAN!) to make it more comfy.

I've actually thought about this and have a few CAT-7s around but haven't really found a great way of carrying it with it being comfortable and not looking ridiculous.

If you regularly wear long pants, they apparently make ankle pouches where you can store such things in relative comfort.  I'm both a casual clothes guy and a Floridian, thus I wear long pants perhaps 3 days a year, otherwise I'd consider it.

(Here's an example of what I'm talkin' about):

On tourniquets, though, do you have strong opinions on CAT-7 vs RATS?  I hear a lot of experts talk about their strong preferences for CAT-7, but I've heard less about why...I think it comes down to ease of deployment, but I dunno for sure.

I've looked at the ankle kits before, but never tried one. I might have to get one just to experiment a bit.

As for the CAT-7 vs RATS, I've never used a RATS and only have CAT-7s because people who know a whole lot more than I recommended them. I have no first hand experience with a RATS TQ.

i wasnt thinking about defense just what would you need to cut when you are out and about. Like i sometimes need to cut stuff at home which is why i have knives at home and i have to cut stuff at work which is why we have box cutters at work but ive never been ambushed by a ups driver while out on a stroll and handed a package lol. the only thing i can think of is sometimes im at a cheap restaurant and they only have those crappy plastic knives and i wish i had a knife with me but I doubt thats what you are using them for lol

I used to work two jobs that both involved a lot of cutting boxes and the like. I got a decent pocket knife because I have small shovels big hands and the "knife" provided by my employer was a metal frame that could hold a razor blade and not much more. Because I used it for both jobs, I kinda just developed a habit of carrying it with me wherever I went without really thinking about it.

It would occasionally cause some issues when going to a club with my mates (thankfully I usually remembered to leave it in my car), but for the most part it was just a tool I'd use at work.

(I haven't read through the thread, if that makes a difference)

I used to carry my iPhone SE 2020, small flashlight, vehicle keys, pocket knife, wad of other random keys, wallet, multitool, Utility knife.

But I must've eaten too many crabbypatties because suddenly my pockets felt super small so I cut out the pocket knife and multitool.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

It’s not about money, neither of my watches are particularly expensive or nice. Here’s my other main one, Hamilton A502, got on eBay for like $100. Need a brown strap for this one.

Carrying a decent 3.5" knife daily is applicable to my job. Makes my daily tasks a lot easier than if I didn't carry one with me.

It does double for self defense purposes though. Now we have actual riots going around, looters, and white people getting attacked for being white...Imma carry a knife. If you still think carry a weapon is dumb well I guess where you live is just roses and daisies, and I envy you.

The only problem of using a knife for self defense is to use a knife you have to be within arms reach of your attacker. If they are that close, the battle is already half lost.

The first course of action should be trying to avoid the fight, not to engage. The instant you engage, you've raised the risk of something going wrong quite a lot. So, I'd run and try to attract other peoples' attention.

I an appreciate that. Unfortunately, i'm to old and way to out of shape to run or engage in too long of a hand to hand conflict. And with today's "The white man is the devil " attitude roaming the streets of the United States in the form of gangs and protests, I and others must do what we can to protect ourselves and our families.
