Do phone receipts link to phone

Im thinking of buying a used phone and im just thinking - the guy has a paper john lewis receipt but how do u know that that's the receipt for the phone? Do they show any sort of serial number on them or something?

 

I would expect them too otherwise people can do dodgy stuff like when a phone is out of warranty buy a different one and swap them around.

It's impractical and a possible security risk to register such details.

so its possible to swap the receipt for the phone?

 

Im just thinking maybe the guy on ebay might have done that?
