New Build.. Cant decide on CPU/GPU

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Adobe Photoshop, lightroom, AE, Premiere CS6 : Blender, Handbrake Games CIV 6: Resident Evil 3 ; Gta V Tomb Raider...

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

 

Hi Everyone  

I currently have an Acer Predator G3600 ( I5 2300 : 8gb ram :750TI) which I have owned for 9 years,  I was thinking of upgrading the MB, CPU, GPU however decided against this as the case has very poor airflow.  

 

I would like a PC that could edit GoPro 4k footage,play games like Resident Evil 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, CIV 6 and some 3D work in Blender.

 

**CPU**                     AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 

**Motherboard**        MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4        

**Memory**               Crucial Ballistix RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) 

**Storage**               Sabrent Rocket 4.0 500 GB 

**Video Card**          MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB GAMING X  

**Case**                   MSI MAG VAMPIRIC 010X ATX Mid Tower

**PSU**                    SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 650 W 80+ Platinum

**Monitor**               Acer KG271Cbmidpx 27 Inch FHD Gaming Monitor 

 

£1650 to build including the monitor.

 

I could save almost £450 if I use a Ryzen 5 3600, drop to 16gb ram and a RX 5700 XT 8GB  THICC III Ultra Etc.

Do you use OBS or other programs using nvec h264 or so? If not, just replace the RTX 2070s with the RX 5700 XT.

Well, if you r short on cash, then drop to a Ryzen 5 3600 . I also think that 16 GB ram should be enough. But don't change the GPU

Have you bought any of those parts yet ? A pcie 4.0 SSD would be wasted on a B450 board as it only supports pcie 3.0. The B550 boards are due out on Tuesday.

 

As for the gpu XFX have awful customer support in the UK at least. I would look at other cards such as the Gigabyte Gaming OC, Powercolor Red Dragon/Devil, MSI Gaming X or Sapphire Pulse/Nitro.

I have not purchased any parts yet... Did want the X570 TOMAHAWK but prices can be as much as £380 for a £220 rrp board.

Another thing to think about is customer support...thanks for the advice.

You didn't mention the RAM specs in your post. Try to get 3600Mhz with the lowest timings you can afford.

The X570 Tomahawk can be ordered (Pre-ordered) from Overclockers UK for £219.95, but still best to wait until Tuesday and see what other options there are.

That's a matter of perspective. Considering it's for a gaming PC, arguably the entire thing is a waste of money. I spent much more than that on my memory back in 2018, and I'm glad I did, because it overclocks like a champ and keeps up with modern offerings.

No it's a matter of price/performance. You can get a 32GB kit for less than that overpriced 16GB kit. And there won't be much difference anyway between a 3200MHz and a 3600MHz for gaming, and certainly not enough to warrant an extra £140 or so.

Why waste money on a 3200Mhz kit? You can get a perfectly good 3000Mhz kit and save $10. You won't notice the difference anyway...

 

Why buy computer parts at all? They lose 25% of their value the moment you open the package. Might as well buy stocks or bonds with the money instead.

Now you are just talking silly to try and justify your recommendation. Also the op is using £ not $ and £140 could be the difference between a higher tier gpu which will make more of a difference than the overpriced Ram.
