PS5 Design Revealed + All New Games!

Sony has just wrapped up their PS5 event, and a ton has been revealed. The design of the console is below:

There are 2 versions of the console: the normal and the 'digital' version. As youd assume, the 'digital' version has no physical place for a game disc to be inserted. 

 

 

I'm super excited even though I think the console looks doesn't look good.

I don't mind that at all. Looks sleek. Can you still lay it on it's side though? I think that's a huge advantage to a lot of the older gen consoles, since that's how most people's tv stands are set up. It'd suck to have to figure something else out just to accommodate your new console. Can't wait to see how it compares to the Xbox...though, I'll never, ever buy a Playstation.

Watched the event live. One of the most boring event I've ever seen, the numerous transitions with the PS buttons got old REAL fast and the people who were talking, frankly looked computer generated to me. Especially that one old dude who never blinked a single time while he was talking.

The spider-man game looks ok. I just hope it's not a quick re-skin of the previous one.

 

As for the consoles themselves... They look like a router, except one of them has a tumor/disc drive growing on it.... The two different models will totally confuse some parents who don't know any better. Imagine someone buying the PS5 without disc drive + a couple disc games for christmas... Only to find out once little Timmy opens it that he cannot play the games... Because there's no where to put the disc.

"Digital" doesn't mean "no disk drive" (which would be weird given the hype around SSD). Digital means PS5 "Digital Edition" won't have any optical drive and you'll have to strictly buy and install everything from internet. The normal one will still have optical drive. Which can also bee seen on the revealed image of the console itself. One has the optical slot, the other one doesn't. I wonder what will be the price difference for this alone.

Whether that black puck is actually needed is unknown. It probably doesn't need to be there but might offer better support.

Is it just the framing with camera tricks. It seems very thin for the hardware they would need to cool...Maybe its longer in the back for the heatsync...

Probably outside of it. The last thing they need to do is incorporate a new heat source into the mix. Plus the power brick let's them use the same internal power handling system regardless of what the regional power standards are; they just need to swap the brick rather than an integrated part of the console.

Neither variant of the PS4 has an external power brick though.

Man this thing is pretty ugly but thanks to Halo coming to PC at long last there's no reason for me to get an Xbox, so PS5 it is for ratchet and clank and hopefully new god of war 2

Eh? Both my PS3 fat and PS4 regular don't use power bricks. Last one I had that had a brick was a PS2 slim.

 

 

I really hope PS5 will work horizontally. Only two games in there were of any significant interest for me. GT7 looks nice. Hope the new storage system helps load times there as GT on PS4 is a pain even on SSD. The other is Stray, although there's not much to go on from the trailer.

Good thing they are starting to give a digital only option, at least now you get the option to just have to wait for the download and install and not install from disc, download day one """""""""""""""patch"""""""""""""" that is as big as the game on the disc if not more, install patch. Physical media on console for me died the moment we let them get away with this level of BS

Its not that bad, but the design reminds me of a console shell being melted off, or broken in transit.

Idk whether anyone else felt the same, but I wasn't too impressed with most of the games at the event. Maybe because I'm mostly a pc player, but it felt like more like a Nintendo event than a PlayStation event

I hope there is no glossy plastic. I hate glossy plastic.

Wish there was a full black version too. I only see it fit with those with white IKEA TV stands. Else it will stick out so much... it's a game console not a conversation piece... but it is hard to judge from 3D renders. I would like to see it in real life.

 

People call it early 2000 desktop or router look... if it has glossy plastic, I tend to agree. And, like the PS3 and the Wii with their glossy plastic, it will look like shit 3 month after purchase

Well that was a real shitshow. Horizon, Ratchet & Clank, and especially Demon's Souls all looked extremely impressive, but no date was given for any of them either, which means they're not coming until 2022 or 2023. I was really hoping for the Demon's Souls remake to be a launch title and was kind of expecting it since we have heard rumors about Bluepoint doing this project for at least a couple of years now. Man, only Nintendo ever launches with high-end games it seems. Pretty sure I'll wait until 2023 or so when there is a cheap PS5 Slim to jump on the bandwagon.
