Installing Windows without a GPU?

Mrgoldy

Hi there! So I ordered parts for my new pc but the main problem is that the gpu is arriving some days later. So I was wondering if I could install Windows without a gpu. The cpu is a ryzen 7 3700x so it doesn't have integrated graphics. But maybe it's possible with the motherboard??

No, the 3700X doesn't have an graphical capabilities regardless of the ports on the motherboard there is nothing to "power" them. Additionally the board will fail to POST without a GPU (or APU if you went with a CPU with integrated graphics)

So it probably doesn't have a HDMI or VGA built in port probably.

What motherboard? Only boards I know of though, are server boards which have their own on board gpu. So I might not be much help. Please link your motherboard though as others might be more help :)

But the motherboard itself should already boot with a bios without a gpu right?

No, POST checks for GPU. If there is no dedicated or integrated GPU it will fail to complete post.

No, of course not.  You cannot boot a machine without ANY form of video output, unless it was designed for serial terminal booting.  Which I doubt is the case here as that's enterprise level stuff.

Ok thank you. I'm new to pc building and I'm open to critisism.

We were all new at one point. Everyone has to learn :)

Just wait until the GPU gets there to put it together although I know how tough that can be :P

Haha thx. 😊 I will still check if the motherboard and the other parts light up when I turn the psu on. (I'm still missing a lot of stuff. I only have the cpu, some case fans and the case itself for now.)

Some mobo's can post headless but that's only useful for a headless OS like unraid. The strix b450 being one example.

If you don't even have RAM don't bother. Just wait until everything's there.
