Illegal to install permanent networking in Australia (thoughts?)

Tipsy_Kangaroo

So,

I was looking at doing some networking stuff for my house, including security cameras.

But apparently it's illegal to do it yourself in Australia, see quote bellow.

"In Australia, it's illegal to do your own fixed home cabling. It's legal to connect devices using pre-made ethernet cables strung along skirting boards or under carpets"

What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Personally I think it's a stupid law

Maybe they want a qualified technician to do that? (for safety, they don't want you to drill a hole into things in the wall such as a gas pipe,a water pipe or electrical wiring)

I get where they are coming from as i believe it is also illegal to do any work on your electrical installation in Australia but seeing as networking is low voltage DC, it is kind of stupid yea. Unless you go for PoE, the only thing you can hurt yourself with is the sharp wires. Maybe they want to prevent shoddy installations that catch fire?

I highly doubt people are going to go drilling random holes into their walls without actually checking what's behind them

A lot of people do that 😅

Welllll i doubt anyone would ever check, so you could always diy it, I'm totally not suggesting doing something kinda illegal but probably would only result in a fine

should still be fine, 24awg can handle 3.5A if you get solid core. Unless you run PoE this should be plenty when it short circuits

Legally in many places in the US you need a permit and potentially a certified electrician to do electrical work. Does not stop people like my dad from do it it his self and not obtaining a permit. Hows the government going to know?

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Also me: Ignore any law I choose, I understand the repercussions, should I get caught but...as Coach always said - its legal if the Ref doesn't see it.  This is one of those laws where I would apply this logic.

I love this part. Wonder what the stance is on making your own cables? Guess my crimping tool is too dangerous.

As others have said. It's probably just to protect idiots from themselves. Think you'll be fine.
