Google in $5bn lawsuit for tracking in 'private' mode

So it turns out that ingonito mode isn't that incognito, sort of. From what I gather you can retroactively link cookies to your Google account by signing in whilst inside the incognito mode.

This would be a big no no as Google states it won't save cookies or data when browsing in incognito mode (below screenshot).

that is logical. if you sign in to an account incognito mode is useless, whatever site you sign in to can still track everything you do in that session. this is common sense. why does google need to be sued for this? they can't stop you from being stupid and signing in to a site.

I agree, although Google states that it won't save cookies or trackers eventhough it is locally.

it doesn't save them meaning that if you close the incognito window they get yeeted. while you have that window open the cookies are present as wiping them all the time or not allowing them breaks basically every website.

And actually I've experienced a similar thing once. I open some websites in incognito mode (without logging in or creating an account on these websites) then started to get related ads on Facebook. That's probably due to the fact that I'm using an Android device and Google and 3rd parties basically keep track of whatever you are doing on your phone.

Exactly. Incognito is basically just a normal browser window except it deletes everything once you close the window. A bit like running Linux from a DVD,

Sadly, the average person who just buys a computer to browse facebook, check email, etc is pretty clueless what goes on. All incognito mode does is delete your data locally once you close Chrome. Anyways, when the regular Joe Blow uses incognito mode, they EXPECT that EVERYTHING is kept private.

google can't block all cookies or all tracking in incognito mode because that depends on what third party sites you browse. this is a pointless lawsuit. if you wanna be privvate you need to use Tor and a VPN and even that isn't perfect and can be tracked still.

Ugh, I'm so sick of hearing this.

The person got third degree burns over 10% of their body because the coffee was FAR too hot and McDonalds KNEW about the issue from numerous complaints dating back a years and chose to ignore the risk. The woman only wanted them to cover medical bills and nothing more. McDonalds refused so she then sued them. They kept the coffee at 180 to 190 degrees or hotter because they didn't want people to take advantage of free refills.

I find the firefox disclaimer a bit more normie friendly as they dont try to claim cookies are blocked when we all know session cookies are definitely still a thing.

wait people thing incognito like masks your activity?  lol to me it was always just when I didn't want search history to be saved. Since I pretty much never delete mine. The last time I did I hated it. I tried to look up old things i forgot and never found them again. Good ole browser history saves me on that. I never though it was an anon type deal.

The McDonald's one isn't as cut and dry as it is made out to be.  They served the coffee at 88C, which causes 3rd degree burns in less than 3 seconds...you expect coffee to be hot, but McDonalds was providing them at a temperature that no other company was serving them at (She had 16% burn on her skin, and 6% of it being 3rd degree burns).  Other places it would take at least 20 seconds...ontop of them already paying out $500,000 in settlements with 700 people who had scalded themselves as well.  It is also that McDonald created a situation where people could get severely injured.

Honestly, I don't see this going anywhere (remember the days before private/incognito modes in browsers).  There are so many other ways companies can decide to track you, and honestly if they were blocked or punished for tracking, how many sites would no longer exist (or resort to the old days of super sketchy ads to make up for not tracking users)
