I'm a pentax guy because weather resistance(ofc you would need to use a WR lens along with a WR body), lens compatability w/o adapters since early 1970s (might or might not matter to you), better specs for the price because Pentax isn't very popular/famous, pentaprisms on most bodies, stellar high ISO performance, their cameras come in many different colours, and if you have larger hands the ergonomics of a Pentax is usually better.

The main disadvantages for going with a Pentax would be the in-body stabilization and accesories. The in-body SR is a double edged sword, because it means every lens will get SR, but it's not as good as lens SR. Since Pentax isn't as popular as other brands there aren't as many lenses on the market, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lens for every job.

Oh, and video on Pentax cameras is generally shit so if you're buying it for video, don't go pentax.

Easy, E-M10mk3 kit:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-Compact-System-Camera-Double/dp/B075FL1TTT/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2UTFU3Z7QOHBN&dchild=1&keywords=e-m10+mark+iii&qid=1591425016&sprefix=e-m10%2Caps%2C317&sr=8-4

Get it in black or silver

16MP (great for up to a 20x30 print)

*AMAZING* image stabilization (olympus IBIS is the best in the world)

Crisp 4k video

Small and light

Great JPEG's straight out of camera

wi-fi images and video to your phone super easy

Used lenses are super cheap and plentiful

This is really the best value in photography today. I can shoot the lions share of my jobs on this camera, and an APS-C camera like a Fuji or Sony won't really net you any better photos, they'd just cost more and you'd be packing bigger lenses for no real reason.

16mp is really not good in 2020. it lacks the 24-32 I'd expect in this price range in 2020

its got bad autofocus

it over sharpens jpegs

WIFI is on almost every camera now

EF has even more

4k video at 100mbs is lackluster

16MP is a fantastic 20x30" print

CDAF is *extremely* accurate (more reliable than my Nikon D4)

Every camera overcooks their JPEG's (Nikon's are the worst)

Good Wi-Fi is hard to find (cough cough Nikon snapbridge)

Micro 4/3rds is actively being driven by multiple companies

Unless you're doing heavy grading, 100mbs 4k is FINE. It's a 500€ FFS

But no, you're right, an E-M10mk2 with crappy autofocus and only 16MP sucks, these photos I shot with one demonstrate that perfectly:

not for a 700€ camera in 2020. I take 1x1 crops for instgram all the time out of my SL2 I end up with a 16mp after it but

there are complaints it isn't consistent

There is a difference between style and maxing sharpness to try to hide a lower res

not everyone uses it. I have a few times but 99% of the time I shoot raw and edit

yes but your missing out on fast zooms at good costs and don't have the super fast 1.8 zooms like on any other mount

I didn't say you couldn't take good photos just in 2020 it doesn't seem like a good buy for the price.

I would recommend the EOS m50 and then invest in a decent lense. The m50 is an awesome camera and when you pair it with a solid lense you can have some pretty good photo and video quality if you are wanting a camera in the EOS line up. Canons colour science is amazing so I think it is a good idea to go Canon.

I am not an expert! I have had experience building computers but in no way am I Linus! Please correct me if I am wrong, I would love to here your feedback!

Have a good day!

there are better for the money now. Video kinda sucks on it but it also does on most mirroless bodys. The color science is good but given most people spend at least a little time editing it isn't a big deal.

Hello,

I am currently looking for a good DSLR camera for general photography

my budget is around 700€

Currently i'm leaning towards the Cannon EOS line of cameras.

Thanks for your help!

I'm in the US, so quick conversion tells me about $800 US.

I would look at a reputable used equipment store. Depending on what you are doing with it, I'd suggest the Nikon D5200, D5300, or D5500. A D5200, in Excellent+ condition, can be had from Adorama for $289 or about 257 Euros. It's 24.1 MP, 1080/60p video, and it has an articulating screen on the back that can be swiveled away and face the front. It would include the battery and charger, maybe a manual (or you can download it). I don't know if they sell / ship to where you are, but I'm sure there are reputable dealers there. B&H Video would have similar deals and prices. If you buy from either of these places, they stand behind their products and sales.

You noted general photography. With that body you could order a Nikon brand 18-200 mm, AF vibration reduction (VR) lens, rated as being in very good condition, for another $219 / 195 Euros. You might also look at a Tamron 18-300 mm, also in very good condition (no VR), for $179 / 159 Euros. That still leaves you with about 250-280 Euros of budget to pick up a tripod, filter (always have at least a skylight filter to protect the lens), a bag/case, a flash (I always recommend new on flash units. Look for Yungnuo or Neewer brand), maybe another lens, and...
...again, not sure if it's available where you are, but when I've purchased used bodies I've also picked up a warranty. Mine have come from Mack, out of New Jersey, USA. For a D7100 camera that I think was used at about $800 / 700 Euros at the time, the warranty for 5 years was about $75 / 65 Euros.

If you find a used store near you, check out the bulk of lenses. I'd suggest a camera body of the brand that they seem to have more lenses for. Prices are usually less if there is more supply and it should also mean more choice of used equipment. I have had Nikon for 40+ years and bodies are cheap compared to quality lenses. To that, I would stay with one of the big 3 - Canon, Nikon, Sony (formerly Minolta). Pentax makes a good camera, but fewer 3rd party OEMs make accessories for them. That puts higher prices on stuff and fewer used items. Of the big 3, I'd say Nikon will have the fewest problems, Canon will have the best customer service, and Sony will have the most pro level features integrated at the consumer level cameras.

To your one note re: 12 MP for pics today - it's going to depend more on the glass. I have photos from my D70 camera (6.1 MP) and sell them in an 18x24 inch / 450 mm x 600 mm size. It's why a decent, even if very old, 3 MP to 6 MP DSLR will take much better photos than a OnePlus 6T phone with a 20 MP camera. Sure, the software will enhance the photo, but it's not always good enhancements.

IMO, the best camera for general shooting is one you can carry without much extra effort, can pull out quickly when needed with interface (software and hardware) you can get used to.

So it will be nice if you can go to a store and try on different brands of camera to see which you found most comfortable to hold and change settings while shooting.

My personal choice would be the fuji x-e3. Pair with a 18-135mm lens and you should be good for 90% of the time for years to go.

The sony A6000 is a good choice if you are going to shoot video with it, the only downside is its buttons are tiny, impossible to use wearing glove.

For some reason I never like the Camon M cameras, maybe I not good at using them. Even though I had been using a 5D Mk3 at work for years.

Totally agree, pixel count isn't as important if you are not going to corp a lot or make huge print out of your photos. Get a good lens in many case is much more important than pure pixel count for image quality.

Hello,

I am currently looking for a good DSLR camera for general photography

my budget is around 700€

Currently i'm leaning towards the Cannon EOS line of cameras.

Thanks for your help!

I have the Nikon D5500 which is fantastic for photos, but bad autofocus for videos. If you need both, Sony's A series is probably a good bet.
