I'd add a combination of both. Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. However, I would argue the best Anti-virus is yourself. Don't blindly install shady looking software and be vigilant when selecting which websites to visit. If you do those, you'll be fine for the most part. Anti-virus really is there as a peace of mind. 

 

It's sort of like forward collision warning on your car. Yes, it can help you avoid plowing into the stopped car in front of you when you're distracted for whatever reason. But you should still be paying close attention enough so that these systems don't even need to activate. It's not an excuse to be driving carelessly and dangerously as even the best safety nets will fail in certain situations, just like how anti-virus might not be able to catch that new virus you downloaded.

Windows Defender is a top rated anti-virus, coupled with Malwarebytes free edition (you don't lose the ability to do use it after 30 days, just google it) and its a stellar combo.

 

But @BlueChinchillaEatingDorito pointed out the best AV - the grey matter between your ears.

do not install a 3rd party antivirus. they slow your pc down and often mark innocent files as viruses.

don't be scared of the internet, viruses are hard to come by nowadays.
