R9 280x or r9 270x or hd 7970

Im looking to upgrade an old pc and what gpu out of these three is better. The cpu is pentium dual core e6500 2.93ghz , but i will change it for a Q9550 later this year. Will a 500w psu work for the cards. Also the current gpu is hd 5770 512 mb and it died yesterday.

But the 280x  would be a stretch 

It's a really power hungry card plus it needs consistent power delivery

Well the 280X is a rebranded 7970 GHz Edition, so get whichever's cheaper. The 270X is slower than both though (somewhere between an HD 7870 and 7950 iirc?).

If the PSU is as old as the parts you've mentioned, I'd suggest getting a new one. Something like a CX550 would work great, but you could get by with a CX450 too (talking about the newer 2017 grey label models, not the older green label which weren't particularly great).

I've read somewhere that for the gpu the amps on the 12v rail on the psu matters more than the wattage.

Well, yes, but in the case of good, high quality power supplies, the wattage written on the box will roughly represent the amperage of the 12V rail(s). On the other hand, you'll often see cheapo PSUs that claim 500W on the box, but in reality can only deliver something much lower like 16A or whatever on the 12V rail - that, and many other cost saving measures that manufacturers might take, making most cheap PSUs potential fire hazards.

If it's the 80+ White version of the MWE, maybe it'd work with the 270X, but I still wouldn't do it.

If it's the 80+ White version of the MWE, maybe it'd work with the 270X, but I still wouldn't do it.

What about the deepcool de600 v2 600w psu?

If you can't find the CX550 in your area, I'd suggest taking a look at the forum's PSU tier list here, and seeing what you can find locally that's at least a B tier, and getting that.

Or a be quiet system power 8 s8-600w but it says 12v on two rails

Or should I get the corsair vs650 will it be overkill for the r9 280x and later the Q9550

The System Power 8 is fairly old at this point if I'm not mistaken.

If it's the old, orange label VS, then don't even think about it.

 

The Q9550 will pull around 90-100W at full load and the 280X probably around 230-250W in a worst case scenario, so let's call it around 375-425W at full 100% unrealistic load. As I've said previously, a good 550W unit (so B tier or higher in the PSU tier list I mentioned earlier) would suffice. The new VS is in the C rank, for reference.

Is this good because i cant find it in the psu tear list at least this model fsp raider ppa5502302
