(Budget) Future Proof CPU/GPU Combinations [Next Gen Games...]

Hey,

I'm planning to build my first gaming pc (around 800-850€) and I'm not sure if the parts I wanna buy are future proof for the next gen games which will probably rely on multiple core performance...

I thought about one of these options for my build:

  1. R3 3300X & RX 5600 XT
  2. R5 3600 & RX 5600 XT
  3. R3 3300X & RX 5700.

(I can't afford R5 3600 with RX 5700 and I can't find a RTX 2060 right now that is cheaper than a RX 5700 so that's not an option.)

So my question would be if any of these are future proof (for at least 3 years, I won't upgrade my pc for at least for this time because I can't afford it...) or would I need better components for a future proof gaming pc?

I don't plan to play many AAA titles, just a few, but I'd like to play in 1080p with 60fps or more at mid to max settings. And I would prefer it to not overclock anything if possible for a future proof pc because I don't know exactly how it works, I don't wannt to break anything and I would like my pc to live for more than just a couple of years.

I'm worried about the 4c/8t of the 3300X but also about the 6GB VRAM of the 5600 XT... but as I said, I can't get the 6c/12t with 8GB VRAM option. :(

What motherboard do you plan on getting?

I'd generally say people tend to upgrade their graphics cards more often so you should go for the better CPU now (especially since a 5600XT, particularly the 14Gbps models, aren't far behind the 5700), but honestly the 3300X is a very capable gaming chip now, and with how Ryzen chips get rapidly discounted once the next-gen CPUs launch (so in this case Zen 3 later this year), I think you could go with the 3300X and 5700 and be fine.

That being said, if you're certain that you won't be able to upgrade this system at all in the next 3+ years, go for the 3600 and a 14Gbps VBIOS model of the 5600XT.

The 1660S Isn't That Bad Compared To The 5600 XT And It's A Lot Cheaper And I've Heard That AMD's Navi GPU's Have Overheating Issues

Overheating issues? never heard of it tbh

1: choose a proper power supply. Gold should be MINIMUM for a 3+ year. If you can find a Platinum then even better. Consider the local power grid (if they have frequent brown-outs, then you need a UPS aswell)
2: 4c/8t with the highest Ghz possible. Dont buy into new tech if you plan on having it for many years. You can find good deals on mature hardware rather than getting the latest (and suffer birthing problems)

3: RX 5700 with the best heat performance (check gamers nexus or toms hardware for it).
4: 16GB of ram maximum. My 5 year ago investment of 16GB DDR4 is still plenty even today and will be for the next 3+ years
5: Skip on an expenisive case. Get the most box standard second hand mid tower you can get. You could even get one for free.

6: single 200mm fan on the sidepanel and filter panels/mesh on all intakes

7: Only problem will be if you want to OC or not. OC means OC ready motherboard.

I thought about B550 Micro-ATX if it's not too expensive. Otherwise I would get a B450 3000 series ready motherboard if I can find one.

They don't exactly look too budget friendly at the moment.

Something like a B450 Mortar Max from MSI would work great, and it'd even be enough for a 12-core 3900X. Also, MSI confirmed Zen 3 compatibility on their 400-series motherboards.

The Best Rated 1660 Super On Amazon UK Would Cost You About £245

While The

The Best Rated 5600 XT On Amazon UK Would Cost You About £280

With The £280 You Could Buy A 1660 Ti But Then You're Getting Dangerously Close To Cheap RTX 2060 Prices

So If You Want A Navi Series GPU I Suggest You Get One With Good Cooling

1. Efficiency rating does not equal the quality of the power supply. Disregard this advice. Just do research on individual units

2. 4c/8t is on its way out. I'd rather have a CPU with more cores that will last longer and provide better performance for things besides gaming. With the tier of GPU OP is considering there won't be a bottleneck anyway

3. Depends. A 5600XT is still plenty powerful for 1080p and that money could be better spent on things like the GPU and a non-crap case or motherboard

4. Agreed

5. While an expensive case is most certainly a luxury, a shitty case dampens the whole experience. They’re loud, don’t cool well and are a nightmare to build in. Of course, there are good cheap cases. You just have to do some research

6. Many cases don’t support that, and certainly not cheap cases. 1 or 2 fans at the front and 1 or 2 fans for exhaust are just fine.

7. Ryzen 3rd gen isn’t really worth OCing with PBO. Port selection and connectivity is more important here.

UserBenchmark is not accurate. Good for a very broad ballpark but useless for directly comparing GPUs in the same general tier.

PSU calculators are not accurate. If you’re not sure make a post in the PSU section here and someone will be glad to help out.

Never seen PCPartPicker. Thanks alot for the info :)

But I stand by my opinion, that gold cert PSU should be minimum for long term investments. Nothing worse than un-reliable power delivery.

too bad that an efficiency label says nothing about how reliable the power delivery is.

there are even platinum powersupplies that should be avoided due to their protectionset and regulation.

and id pick a post march MWE 80+ white V2 over many bronze efficiency powersupplies, and potencially some gold ones aswell.

1. good PSU yeah efficiency rating doesn't matter

2. stutter fest in some games

4. Base 16 but those who leave lots of stuff open are moving to 32gb

5. airflow should be main goal

6. almost no cases have sidepanel fans

true but given its looking like a multi year build given how consoles have pushed better core usage more cores at a slower speed maybe even better as time goes on.

that could certainly be the case, but it appears 8 thread parts will be doing fine for some time and abandoning such a large part of the customer base would be odd.

For next gen future proofing I'd wait for Zen 3 and GTX 3000 / RX 6000 series. It would be foolish not to wait a bit more for Zen 3 with higher IPC uplift and Radeon RX 6000 series as well as new NVIDIA's RTX cards because this time they'll both offer hardware ray-tracing.
