Freesync Issues with screen

Hi I'm having issues with my: 31 inch Dell d3220dgf Freesync2, 2560x1440, HDR, 165 hz screen.

Everything runs perfect except if I enable Freesync, it will then create small stutters and 'flickering' in games and in windows in general. 

Is there some way for me to edit the frames that it is outputting? I'd much rather have 144hz which are smooth with freesync, than 165 without freesync.

 

Suggestions are very much welcome :)
