RGB question: Is the header compatible with run of the mill RGB strips?

I'm working on assembling my first build soon and I'm not a huge RGB type of guy, but my motherboard and CPU cool both have RGB built is as well as on my GPU, so I'm thinking of dipping my toe in it.  Mostly I'd just like some subtle accents rather than a full on RGB show.  But I'm considering putting a strip or two behind my monitors as as sort of back light effect.  So two questions:

First do I have to use a strip that is designed to work with computers?  I'm not thinking addressable, just standard RGB.  I figure I'll probably use the "breathing"/"pulsing" effect pretty much only.

Second, given that my case will not be super close to my monitors, I'm going to need extension cables.  Do I need specific computer format RGB extension or are the headers on motherboards pretty much the same as the run of the mill RGB strip format?
