Trust me on this.  Doing the right thing for yourself hurts a lot less than getting scammed by someone selling off defective hardware without clearly labeling it, and then you having to sit there and rationalize or mental health management the purchase for months...it really sucks.

Should have been labeled "as is, not working or for parts."

When you get a properly working system it will be worth it.  It's only time.

Hello i bought an MSI B450M-A Pro Max and got a little bit ripped off, the locking mechanism on the socket is completely missing. Can I just plop on a fan and will the cpu work like that or do i need a locking mechanism from another board/something? Thanks.

The plastic part is missing too, as well as the lever*

If you didn’t do it by yourself try to return the product if possible.

So you're missing the socket mechanism in blue here?

I would return the board.

In theory it would probably work without the mechanism, but the CPU can shift around a bit in the socket and I think it would probably have some gaps where the pins are exposed.

Not worth the hassle too when you remove your cooler in the future.

I just received it and wanted to ask if it could possibly work. Returning it and getting another one will take up to 4 days

You need that arm for properly mounting the cpu.

If you've bought that board used, I suspect something else may have broken with it as well. I would not trust that board and give it back.

If the socket looks like this, just imagine what else they could have done with the board.

Return the board. I cannot at all recommend using it.
