Mistake Picking my PSU

Hello,

I used to own a 1080ti with a 8700K and they would never use more than 450W at max stress.

If you have trouble with overclocking it's either you set a too low or high voltage (probably too low in your case). I run my 8700K at 5GHz, 1.3V.

When I was picking out parts for my gaming rig two years ago, I only went off the estimated wattage on the pcpartpicker site. The estimate was 438W total, so I thought a gold 550W was enough. I only found out recently when I started to play more demanding titles, watching overclocking cut my performance, and Afterburner saying it couldn't get the voltage it needs in a scan. I made another estimate here https://outervision.com/b/mYOtGq, and looked through the posts here to confirm I should have gotten at least 650 in wattage.

So now I need to look into a proper PSU, and could use help picking one out. I'm budgeting $150, and preferably don't want to wait long as I've been seeing weeks of delay on Amazon and Newegg.  Funnily the wattage site recommended this Gamemax PSU https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083RR7GBT/?SubscriptionId=AKIAIGIKPS7N7DIKIGVQ&tag=xov-20&linkCode=xm2, when the tier list put it in D tier.

That has nothing to do with the PSU wattage

You would get a more accurate estimate by going to random.org and generating a random number.

I have a similar system and don't pull more than 420w from the wall, even OC'd.

Like said above, wattage is fine.

I got a second opinion from random.org, and now I need 737Watts.

🤣🤣random.org is a random number generator and it hasnt anything to do with psus.

you already have a good enough psu the problem is somewhere else

550w is plenty.

the G3 is a propper PSU.

Afterburner saying it couldn't get the voltage it needs in a scan

  1. software readings of voltage from powersupply rails are rather inaccurate
  2. UVP on the PSU would kick in before any such issue
  3. the input filtering would also compensate.
  4. the voltages it is reffering to are likely not from the PSU rails.

What a cool coincidence! The MoBo I'm using has a built in OC for the 8700k with the same GHz, and about the same Voltage. I should be content with that since it's so similar. What I still don't understand is how I got poorer GPU performance raising the power limit to 120%, and Core/Memory Clocks by 100/150 in Afterburner? Though, that's probably because I didn't raise the core voltage as you were saying.

That could likely make your PC restart if not enough power, I usually don't OC my GPU, auto OC or gaming mode is usually enough (I don't see much difference) and stable.
