AMD Cuts Price of 3900X in response to Comet Lake

I've noticed this trend more and more recently. Something is released for $499 & it's still £499 or sometimes more.

I know the pound has devalued but it's still not 1:1.

Well, I hate to admit it but there's a partial reason to be made for that..

If it costs 399$ and ships to Europe, it needs to be converted to euros (363€) then add your local tax (which is 20-27% depending on the country). With a 22% tax that's already 443€. In most cases, this tax covers to end-user tax only and not import & handling fees, which adds to another flat 10-20€ + tax and we're at 463€.

Yes, they could make it cost less because the seller's cost is not actually 399$ in the first place, but it kinda makes sense anyway it's just frustrating. I miss the days where you could order from US at stupidly lower prices because of USD-EUR conversion etc.

[Made the EU example but it's the same everywhere in the world]

Worth noting that US listed prices usually do not include taxes, whereas UK prices do

$399-409 is the normal price at Microcenter. I paid $340 for my open box 3900x on the 4th. If the price is actually dropped $100 and I can get a new one for $299-309, that's a no-brainer return/exchange.

I remember on r/hardwareswap about 400 was the going price of used 3900x's. I wonder if this move will drive those prices down even further. If thats the case I might snap one up...

Yep.  I paid $400 for mine a few months back.  Regardless this makes the Intel option look even worse right now.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

Oof, just saw this after watching the Intel 10th gen video.

Welp, I thought Intel was a pretty good choice for price:performance, but not anymore.

Can't say I'm surprised though of a price cut, just wasn't expecting THAT much of a price cut.

Intel 10th gen is disappointed. i9 10900k produces a lot heat and consumes a lot of power, but barely show any huge improvement over current Zen 2 Ryzen 9 series.

This barely qualifies as news, as this $100 price drop is like just an MSRP thing, while the actual prices have in reality been slowly dropping since launch anyways.

competition driving prices down and performance and cores up. I have no arguments here. Release those new AMD processors and make intel drop their prices at launch :). Wishful things.

The microcenter site seems to not be up? Is there a large influx people buying the CPU right now?

This is about the time that AMD should be cutting costs on their CPUs anyway, if they're following the trend of their last CPUs. If I recall, there have historically been small price drops leading up to their next gen (the 3600 is already available for about $25 less than launch price, has been for a while) with their Ryzen 7 CPUs seeing this adjustment last.

What is not as certain is what will happen to their Ryzen 3 CPUs. The 3100 and 3300X came out so recently, and will have been on the market for such a short time when 4th gen hits, so I'm not sure if they'll see replacements or price drops anytime soon.

I expect them to do this as little as possible (who wouldn't want to sell 4-year old CPUs at original MSRP?), but for the time being it will probably continue to happen.

AMD has a manufacturing advantage cost, and one that gets bigger the higher the core count, so they can always undercut Intel; the problem for them is not so much how to offer the most compelling value, but how to maximize profits, which may entail leaving Intel some room while collecting higher margins on their lineup.

Or just get a 80 litre tank of LN2 and refill every week. Might stop it thermal throttling too

And you should be able to hopefully get a measurable performance increase if you try to overclock it.

I think it's more because the 4th gen of processors is coming out, not so much that they're trying to do anything to Intel. It just has a nice side affect.

considering the price to performance, the 3900x would indeed be a great CPU. heck if only considering the productivity with this chip Its so much better than the 10900k. heck, considering what you will require to run the 10900k, might as well get the 3950x. Like wtf is the price of the board, and the requirement of 360mm AIO MINIMUM

other than that, if you are plainly on the gaming and want to get the best of the best in gaming without considering the value for money, then 10900k it is.

Except the fact that you don't need a 360mm AIO minimum...way to just spread lies 🙄 You also don't need a super expensive board.

It actually pulls over 300 on its own in heavier CPU workloads with a fairly normal/tame OC.  Scroll down to the power measurements.
