Where to find quality videos for work samples?

Hi,

 

I've been practicing a lot my video editing and animation skills recently and would like to add work samples to my portfolio. At first I wanted to download videos from good YouTubers but now I think that people wouldn't be able to judge my work this way since they are already edited.

 

So do you have any resource for quality videos, preferably interviews or monologues on really any topic that I can use?

Do you want to put other people’s work in your portfolio? Or do you want to find raw stock footage to edit?

Yes raw footage mainly or someone else's work with little editing. I don't mind crediting them. Unfortunately on image banks there aren't interviews and other meaningful content of this kind.

It's not a copyright infringement if I clearly mention the source. Actually I'm not good at filming and I've been mostly focusing on post production.

Still can be.  You’re limited to ten seconds and some other stuff.  Copywrite is very specific legally.  Use caution.  As far as raw stock footage goes there used to be tons of it.  It’s been years though.  I don’t know where to look any more.

I believe you can try storyblocks, videoblocks, adobe stock, shutterstock etc etc.. Unfortunately this sort of thing isnt the stuff you get for free. It is a craft for some people and simply taking other's work and editing them firstly copyright is a big issue, secondly you shouldn't. Yes you may be

You should be trying out to film your own videos, and try editing them. It may actually also be easier as you can film to fit your editing style.

I'll add, I primary film and while I do post production for my own stuff my GF is an editor first shooter 2nd.

for most work you need to be good at both but there are times where you'll just be 1 or the other.

I wouldn't have 5 jobs in the last 12 months if I didn't do both. (it is only a side gig as a college student)

So the deal is you need higher Rez stuff than you can shoot with just your phone or something? Or is it you want stock footage that is professionally prelit and stuff?  My info is 90’s era but even back then there were a host of pretty specialized professions.  They had weird names that came from the film industry like “best boy” and “grip”. To get professional looking work you kind of needed most of them.

Really now for an interview or event coverage 1-2 people will work. sure for a music video you'd be looking at 4-8 even for a small one.

Director/producer, Director Photgraphy, 1st Assistant Camera, 1-2 grips/camera assistants, makeup/stylist/touchup, Head grip.

 

I can shoot a bunch of static interviews solo with an hour or so of setup time but I prefer to have at least 1 grip

Heh.  Point.  I never did real film.  I just took classes on it and talked to people.

Full films still use dozens if not hundreds of people but so much production now is music videos, ads or promo/internal videos many of those use strip down crews.

 

I'll give an example. a 10 day (2 weeks) shoot costs 2-3K for gear rentals and things like HDD but labor even for just 1 person working 12 hour days is 6k at 50$ an hour.

I checked those but couldn't find actual interviews and stuff. Their videos of this kind usually don't have any audio. I'll give it another try.

I actually want to focus on animation. So mostly After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop... Hopefully moving to C4D and Blender when I'm good enough. But for now I need this interview footage for one particular demo. The main issue with recording myself is that I don't have any gear for that other than my phone, so no lighting whatsoever.

You nailed it. I want prelit stuff and good audio so I can focus on the editing.

See you really not being creative enough, for years many of hardwarecanucks was lit with a 5$ floor light with a decent bulb in it

Well I think I'll just go the other route and take some super popular content like famous interviews from presidents, historical speeches and stuff. Maybe famous standup comedians stuff too.

Why not? The idea is to go from a long footage with no editing to something polished with animations and other visua effects. It doesn't differ a lot from stock footage actually.

If I actually had work that didn't involve kids or super specific topics I'd share some footage.
