Ram issue 6GB to 3.8gb

Go to solution Solved by HotCheeseNachozAndBurritoz,

Did you build this PC or did you get a prebuilt? If you built it yourself, it should be quite easy to troubleshoot. Firstly remove one stick of RAM and see it the system still works and shows ~3 GB. If it works, remove that stick and insert the other RAM stick to test if the system works and shows about ~3GB. If one of the stick works perfectly and the other one shows a lower RAM, the one which shows the lower RAM is likely faulty. If both of them work, try inserting the RAM into the appropriate dual channel slots and perform a CMOS reset. If it does work, go in your BIOS and adjust the RAM frequency to what the manufacturer recommends e.g. 2400 MHz or 3200 MHz.

I have 6GBs of ram in my system at the moment and it says i only have 3.8GBs on the about page

I'm using pop os 20.04

my motherboard is the.  I use 3x2GB sticks

That would be my guess, too!  Run

my system IS indeed 64 bit. so how come when I look at my system specs on my pc it says it only has 3.8GBs of ram?

again my setup is

CPU -111--

my cpu is the i7 920

my os IS 64 bit.

I have 6GBs of ram in my system. non of them are faulty

How much VRAM do you have? Your RAM could be 5.8 GB out of which 2GB could be VRAM. Feel free to post your output for the "lspci" command without the quotes.

so sorry for the late reply I thought i posted this on reddit.

Ussually with APUs and integrated graphics, some of your RAM might be used. In your case, it shouldn't be a problem since you are using a dedicated GPU. Are you certain that Windows shows 6GB of RAM while playing Minecraft? I am sorry that I am asking you to post outputs for commands but I am interested to know what kernel version you are using

Quote

uname -r

and the output the

command gives. Lastly make sure your system is up to date and all the drivers are installed. I think you can use Pop Shop to do so. This should not be happening under normal circumstances but if it is happening, it could be an issue of hardware support by the version of the kernel you are using. Are you using some piece of hardware that is relatively new? If that is the case, you would want the bleeding edge Linux kernel. Try booting from a Manjaro Live USB (they also offer Gnome if that is what you are used to). You do not have to install Manjaro but run the

command from a Manjaro Live USB and let us know what you find. If it works, the issue was most likely an older version of the Linux kernel. As much as I would like to recommend Ubuntu based distros like Mint and Pop OS, many times they do not work with newer hardware out of the box because they use an older Linux kernel. This does increase stability but it has an impact on hardware support. Most experienced Linux users can change the kernel to a newer version and deal with driver issues but that can be a lot of work. Switching distributions however is a lot easier for the beginner. All you have to do is copy over your home folder and install the packages you need. First we must identify if the issue indeed is the old Linux kernel before we can discuss your options.

For the First command it's

5.4.0-7629-generic

for the free command

total        used        free      shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:        4025528     2987920      125692      403188      911916      389164
Swap:       4193784     2042896     2150888

I might switch to manjaro

but when I went there my wifi was very slow.

even on pop os. but I think i just need to updated the drivers when I get there.

Does Manjaro show you the  6 GB RAM? You might want to try updating your WiFi drivers for sure but in case it doesn't work, I remember using a program called ndiswrapper in the past which can load a Windows XP wireless driver. I do not know if it still works with the newer Linux kernels but you can always get a good USB WiFi adapter with out of the box Linux support for cheap or another Wireless card.

Manjaro says the same thing. 3.8GBs. should I test if one of my sticks are faulty? if so, how?
