NVIDIA ampere RTX 3080ti PCIe 4.0 only?

LadyCore

I heard this somewhere on YouTube, can anyone confirm? If this is the case then the new Z490 motherboards won't be able to support these new GPU's since they have PCIe 3 slots only.

PCIe is both forwards and backwards compatible, you can mix generations however you want.

No idea where you heard that, but there is no way that is going to happen. Intel doesn't even support PCIe 4 yet and they make up the majority of the market. It is possible that some feature could only be enabled if PCIe 4 is used, but in general graphics cards are backwards compatible, meaning they will work in the previous generation PCIe slot they will just be limited to the bandwidth of the PCIe generation.

That's good to hear then! I was worried that Z490 motherboards wouldn't be able to support the new ampere GPU's.

Just like PCIe 3.0 GPUs can work on 2.0 without any performance decrease, the same applies to PCIe 4.0.

Yes it is...you can grab an old PCIe 2.0 GPU and stick in a brand new motherboard and it will also work.

the old PCIe 2.0 does not become PCIe 4.0 :) Its the new motherboards PCIe backwards compatability 😜

The only thing u have to worry about Nvidia s new cards is the price. They will no doubt try to make the 20 series pricing the new 'norm'. A kick in the balls to consumers. If that is the case i would advise voting with ur wallet.
