External Hard Drive on a raspberry pi

I use a Pi 3 as a print server in the office. For storage I've connected an external 3.5" USB enclosure that came with a power supply. I've tried a USB-powered SSD but the CPU downclocked due to less available power. Currently I have a 3 TB WD Red in that enclosure. Lots of storage for larger print jobs is great.

So I think its finally time to upgrade my pi powered FTP server to a higher capacity maybe 2 terabytes.

Rasberry Pi 3 B rev 1.2

I have been running my 4 64 gb usbs for some time and i am tired of having some files on there while some are just lying around so will some external harddrives work directly or should i get a powered usb hub.

Also can you please suggest some external hardrives to use.
