980 ti for 1440p 144hz?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

I recently got my check in the bank finally, which has spurred me to do some upgrading. I am currently running an i5 4690k and a 980ti. I have just bought a ryzen 7 2700x to begin with as a good start since you can get them for less than 200 bucks on Amazon right now. Bottleneck tester actually says the CPU is too powerful and my 980ti will bottleneck it. I was wondering if this is true or if I'll need to maybe go to an rtx 2070. Thanks

Yeah... with my 2060 Super I am 90%+ GPU bound, which means in most cases GPU bottlenecked.

Any suggestions for cards that would? I haven't closely monitor d and over the years since I got my 980 ti but their dominance in the CPU market has me intrigued. Is the Vega line compatible to the rtx line nvidia offers?

If it's a gaming computer and you don't plan on doing any streaming or anything like that the 3600 is a better processor for gaming, it may even be cheaper than the 2700x. The 980ti isn't going to do 1440p 144hz with newer games or even demanding older titles. Definitely should be looking into replacing the GPU as well.

The 2070 will be fine for 1440

Don't go Vega... The RX cards are better, Vega was a bust. The RX 5700XT is the only AMD card I would recommend for 1440p 144hz however it does have problems, mainly bugs and bad drivers. The 2060 Super is the minimum out of the RTX cards, anything better will handle it well. If you want to find something used the 1080 and 1080ti are solid contenders, however getting more rare and sometimes overpriced and like the 980ti they are very quickly becoming obsolete.

I would go no less than a 2060 Super... but you should go higher than that like one of these. 2070 Super, 2080 Super, RX 5700 XT

2700x was a bad buy if this a gaming PC, the R5 3600 is cheaper and better.

As for 980Ti performance it's about the same as a 1660Ti.

The RTX 2070S won't give you 144fps in AAA titles on high settings, and it is poor value. IF you really want a GPU upgrade I would get the RX 5700XT, nearly 2070S performance for the price of a 2060S.

I personally would hold out on a GPU upgrade though, next gen will launch later this year.

At launch yeah maybe but from a price/performance standpoint currently not much can touch it. Avoid blower models like the plague.

The Vega cards are pointless especially with the RX 5700 cards being out. Neither the Vega 56 or 64 can handle 1440p 144hz consistently either.

I wasn't suggesting the OP should buy a Vega i was merely calling out your ignorant statement, which going buy your rig specs is understandable.

Just because I have a nice rig doesn't mean I don't know hardware or that I'm biased, I'm a computer technician I build and repair computers for a living(and I worked my ass off to build my current rig) I've had a ton of AMD builds personally and have been doing nothing but AMD builds since Zen2 Ryzen launched because they are amazing processors. I also do a fair bit of benchmarking and testing of new components. The Vega cards in my OPINION(I'm not stating facts here, just what I think about them) are pointless at this time, maybe not as much before the new RX cards but definitely now. Some may not think that way but I do, they were okay after their bugs and drivers were fixed, but then the new cards released. If you want to snag a Vega card you can but for just a little bit more you can buy a 5700XT with a 10-20fps boost, the average used price of a Vega 64 is around $350 to $440ish depending on model, the 5700XT brand new being $380 to $470 depending on model. I've tested both as well as the Nvidia equivalents, and the 5700XT is the better card of the two, not only because of the price, but it's 7nm, and a much newer card. I don't see how this is even an argument. I'm not shitting on the Vega cards, they were okay in the little time they were viable, I'm just saying they are totally obsolete now, if you have one good on you, use it until it doesn't work anymore for you but it's not something that I would buy in 2020. I'm sorry that's just how I see them.

If you can increase the card budget I’d get the best thing you could. Preferably 2080s.
I still use a 1080ti and the frames are bad. Better for me to go back to 1080p and let my cpu struggle.
