Awful performance on new 2080ti

So I've recently built a whole new machine, and just finally got the GPU, a 2080ti. I put it in and was surprised at the poor performance. I'm getting 40-60ish frames at 1080p where most benchmarks for the same card and the same games are getting higher frames than that at 4k. I've set the PC to max performance, I have the latest NVIDIA drivers, my power supply has plenty of wattage I've got two separate PCIe cables, etc. Something is wrong, and my intermediate PC knowledge has failed me. Help please?

Interestingly, I had a similar issue when I first installed my MSI Ventus RTX 2080. I was getting 20-30 FPS in League of Legends. LEAGUE OF LEGENDS!! It was awhile ago, but after installing the game ready drivers from Geforce Experience and I believe some drivers from the MSI website, I restarted the computer and everything seemed to work fine.

reinstalled the nvidia drivers just now even though I'd already done so immediately after install. Should I go to the evga site and look for something else?

I was writing my post before seeing your second one, I've read that you actually need to uninstall the previous graphics card's drivers before installing the new GPU. I could be wrong, though. Intermediate techy here, too.

Can you download Heaven and do a 1080p benchmark? Use Ultra, Tessellation Extreme and AA off. Share the result.

Hmm... yeah, for me, I'm using my first-ever pc build. Didn't have to worry about changing out graphics drivers due to replacing a graphics card, but before completely finishing my build (gpu was the last thing I put in because I was waiting) I had a 1060 I was considering using. Got the 1060 before the 2080, and I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any hassle if I were to install the 1060 before I got the 2080. I had seen that if you replace one graphics card with another that you first need to uninstall all drivers from the old gpu and then install the drivers for the new gpu. Now, I could be wrong, because this was back in 2018, but I believe that was the case.

In the end, I didn't put the 1060 in the system because it was just another week before I got the 2080 and I didn't want to have to worry about running into drivers issues.

Don't forget 1080p puts more strain on the cpu than the gpu. Also what are your temps like? Like @schwellmo92 said run Heaven 1080p benchmark with the settings he suggested and share results.

how would I go without a pci-e cable? Isn't that what connects it to the power supply?

Those numbers do seem quite low. I think @schwellmo92 might be talking about those pci-e cables for mounting your gpu vertically not the power cables from the psu. Anyways you can get a program like MSI afterburner or CPUID HWMonitor to get the gpu temps and frequencies. The 2080 ti performance can be dependent on temp quite a bit.

got temps around 55-67 celcius according to afterburner... is that normal...?

Activate the OSD in afterburner and watch the GPU usage in game.

If the number is very low, try installing GPU-Z to find out the limiting factor.

You mention RAM but don't say a speed for it? Is it above 2133 mhz? Do you have XMP turned on in the bios?

 

I don't think that would be the problem, but who the hell knows with computers.

That will remove all old display drivers, then you can do a fresh intall of latest drivers.

And see what information is being displayed about your card.

So you can what your system is doing across the board, not just the GPU.

If those are are idle templs, they seem a little high.

 

If those are temps underload, i.e. being used heavily, then they seem a tad low, but I don't know the EVGA card, maybe they just have really good cooling.

Yeah ok that is definitely low. I get 162 fps with 4100 score for a Ryzen 3600 + 2070 Super using the settings I mentioned.

 

As others have mentioned check both your CPU and GPU temps while running a game to see if anything is overheating. And check what clock speed your GPU is running at for both the core and memory.

What you need to do is see if your card can operate properly with your R 5 2600.

To do this run MSI Afterburner or Precision X1(with PX1 under HWM select power limit).  After a gaming or bench session look at the Power% graph/power limit. At stock your XC should bounce off 100%.

You should also set your power limit to 130% to get the most out of it.

Here is the 24/7 setup I use for my XC. It will run hotter than your Ultra but you should get close to the same score if your R 5 2600 is capable of it.

Note the difference in the power consumption between stock and overclocked on GPU Z.

The guy above you was hitting 73 in the first and 80 in the second.

 

He might have it over clocked, but 67 still seems quite low under load.

Two fan, two slot EVGA 2080 tis run hot overclocked. My EVGA FTW3 Ultra that has three fans and uses three slots runs 10c cooler.

I also use the default fan curve on my 24/7 overclock to keep the noise down. It down clocks at 84c but it takes more overclock to get it that hot.

 

In games the 2080 ti XC is in the mid 70s so it is not too bad card but it is not cool.
