HDD Weird Behavior... Is it my power supply?

NickDiMaria

Hey guys, this is my first time posting on a forum or anything like that for help so I hope I don't mess this up.

I have a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive that I purchased from OutletPC in January of 2019. In November 2019   I started to notice odd behavior so I RMA'd and got a refurbished drive which also did not work. I thought it was Seagate's fault so I asked for a new drive which they sent me.

I have had that new drive since November of 2019 and I am again experiencing odd issues. These issues include the following:

  • Hard drive going undetected on boot (only sometimes)
    • Requires a restart and drive shows up
  • Some weird noises only after the drive has been running for a little while
  • Some games freeze up that are installed on the HDD

I am now wondering if the drive is dead again, which I would find to be weird since this the third HDD in my system, or if there is something wrong with my system.

My system specs are as follows:

  • MSI Z370 SLI PLUS motherboard
  • i5-8600k
  • MSI 1070 TI Gaming
  • 2x512 GB Sata M.2 SSD
  • 2X8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
  • Corsair 550 Watt Power Supply

I also do have a Commander Pro with 6 fans and a couple LED strips for my case plugged into stored in the hard drive bay, right below the 2TB HDD.

Any ideas you guys have on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I think it’s time to get an ssd (the hard drive is showing symptoms of dying)

I suggest to get these: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E2T0B-AM/dp/B0786QNSBD/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Samsung+ssd+2tb&qid=1587238412&sr=8-1

My only problem with this is the price :(.

Sorry I am not sure what you mean about this? Do you mean to check the drivers for the HDD?

I did check under device manager and the drive is not listed under IDE Devices. And the driver is version 10.0.18362.1.

So I also posted this in the storage section of the forum, but I am wondering if this has come down to a power supply issue. Outlined below is the problem I am facing.

In addition to the specs listed below, it may be of note that I had both my CPU and my GPU overclocked which is obviously drawing even more power.

The CPU I had overclocked to 4.8 GHz All core with a voltage of around 1.31. The GPU I had overclocked using the MSI Afterburner software and can be seen in the attached picture.

I am really stumped on this issue, and I really wish there was an easy fix. Any help you guys can provide me would be super helpful.

Check your cables and change them if possible. I had a bad sata power cable cause one of my drives to slow down/drop out on one of my rigs.

I have it currently hooked up to one of those 4-1 SATA power cable. I have another cable that is 2-1 SATA power cable, and I need to install that anyway for an AIO I ordered. I will try to install that cable and see if I get any better results.

Try another sata data cable if possible as well since those can go bad too.

What box would that cable have come in? The motherboard box?

You typically get a couple of them with the motherboard.

Sorry for the late reply, but I changed both cords and I seem to be experiencing the same issues. This is beginning to get really frustrating.
