 It's one job per thread if you have an 8C/16T processor. It's not the best for WCG to run the CPU pinned at 100% it actually hurts the performance not leaving some CPU time for the OS.

 

On GNU/Linux I've found leaving 2 threads free if the system isn't needed for other functions is enough. On Windows you might want to make that 3 or 4. You can experiment on your own if adding the threads back in makes things better or worse.

This is so you don't have to use VirtualBox, great if you are using VMs and nested virtualization isn't working or you just prefer the idea of Native. Like in the post itself not sure which is actually faster.

Pfffh, c'mon Leadeater you know when it comes to BOINC more cores > core speed. Have Gegger grab a pair of EPYC 7742's and 2TB of RAM. LHC won't know what hit it.

 

Thinking about it though. If we do do LHC I wonder how much RAM it would use on my 32C/64T server. Ol'Windows7ge here's gotta justify having 0.5TB of RAM.

 

I aught to test this before the event begins.

Jeez, is it the only application that does this?

 

If you can stand to be away from your computer for extended periods of time I'd just install Ubuntu/Ubuntu Server to a 16GB thumb drive and run BOINC from there.

considering it's a chromebox i'm not sure what to expect from it

Do you know if CornBooks even allow booting USB media? Distros other than ChromeOS? I have no idea. Never owned one.

 

I touched one once...

i had to basically replace my BIOS, http://mrchromebox.tech/ and https://chrx.org/ are both nice things

 

ctrl+alt+t for terminal that is mildly interesting to use

Well what better use than to burn it up advancing a variety of research fields. 16GB should be large enough for running WCG. You'll then need another USB to act as an installer.

You just run the client much like you do with FAH, there's just a bit of extra configuration within the BOINC application but nothing complicated, just picking projects and account settings.

I would add, if you are planning on attaching to LHC@Home, and are going to do the VM work units in virtualbox (ATLAS) https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=4161&postid=29359#29359 is a good post to make sure you have everything working so that they don't all just error out.

For Windows there is a BOINC + VB installer that sets up everything you need through that single install.

 

Personally for Linux I'm going with the new native method and not using VB, you don't need that anymore.

It doesn't include the extensions for VB that are required, or at least didn't when I downloaded it again a couple of weeks ago.

To my knowledge BOINC doesn't have much in the ways of dials & knobs when it comes to performance tuning. It's not like a video game where you can turn down any number of graphics and/or overclock to increase FPS.

 

Best results I've seen so far is wa you said, Linux, then don't let it peg the CPU at 100%. Keep 2+ threads free.

 

Now some people have discussed that depending on the CPU some projects can run worse than others due to being very CPU cache heavy. In these instances you might see a decrease in WU completion time by running a mix of projects or tasks.

I didn't discover all this in time for the F@H event, but I ain't missing this one.  You have my bow.  And my axe.  And my Ryzen 7 3700X.  And my RTX 2080 Ti. 

Incidentally, I hope the marathon is run on something serving out GPU work.  Turns out my GPU worked pretty well on F@H tasks, so I'm assuming it'll acquit itself pretty well here, if it's allowed to work.
