That cursor thing is not new, I have it in 1909.

Other than that, biggest thing seems like the changes to login.  Offering only biometric methods is not something I've seen anything else ever do before.  They've always been offered in addition to a password, conceivably because a) they're less secure, and b) less reliable (the correct password will always unlock the device but you have no control over if the scan of your face works or not).  Very interesting.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I stand corrected. I had it in my notes that I accumulated over time for this version for some reason...Don't know how it ended up there. And I completely forgot that I mentioned it 2 versions ago.

@GoodBytes update is supposed to bring WDDM 2.7, which should be a large change to the way GPU drivers interact with Windows and the desktop. Any more details?

Ah, I thaugh no one would be intrested in new driver model, especially after viewing people reaction to DCH. I'll update my post.

Is this a relatively minor change like we've had between the last few versions of Windows or will it be more like the XP/Vista leap that broke everything?

Cloud Reset

You can now re-install Windows over the cloud. Bringing a feature that Mac users enjoyed for many years, which is the ability to re-install your device from Windows by automatically get the latest version of the OS from Microsoft servers and perform a system reset/re-install.

omfg, hell is freezing over. Microsoft is thinking about users! Though, since all user built PCs are not going to have custom firmware to be able to download Windows 10 without any form of operating system at all, this will be a lot less useful than it would appear at first glance.

You don't need custom firmware, all you need is an active BCD and bootloader or alternatively grab the utility Microsoft is most likely going to provide that you just boot to via USB or what ever.

For years you've been able to repair Windows from a non-bootable state using Startup Repair and System Restore, or which ever tool you want to try using Startup Repair. Yea it's nice to have but when it comes to pre-builds they generally always have a factory restore partition at the front of the disk and a BIOS boot hook to get in to it and for custom builds use the media you used in the first place.

Macs only require this feature because it's done that way by design, and you're shit out of luck if you don't have working network access or internet access and you didn't prepare a USB drive with a Mac OS image on it.

Installing WinRE is incredibly simple, heck you could create a WinRE flash drive (around 400MB instead of 5GB) and use that to download the OS.

Well... with the current situation going on, if you don't have backups, I would try and avoid day 1 or even week 1 force upgrade.

We don't know the response time of MS if it comes out now, nor the impact of the quality of testing.

i always thought VRR doesnt have to be supported by the game. the game just outputs the fps as always and the gpu driver/monitor sync hz to it?

From my understanding, unless dev did extra work to bring support, or the GPU driver did work to bring support, it would not have support from DirectX 11 "out of the box".

Thanks. WDDM 2.7 has been something of a talking point in the GPU scene for a while. We actually have results from testing on it, back in last October.

But before we start, there is something I forgot in the last update of Windows (1903). Microsoft has added a new toggle in the Graphics Settings in the Settings panel for variable refresh rate supported GPU and Displays (AMD FreeSync, Nvidia G-SYNC and VESA DisplayPort Adaptive Sync).

freesync.png.2c00473d711f5b482962b745e97fc198.png

This toggle does not enable/disable Variables Refresh Rate (VRR), it enhances it if you have enabled for some DirectX 11 games (running in full screen) that doesn’t support VRR natively. This feature is disabled by default.

If you do not find the toggle under Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings, then your system configuration is not compatible.

Apologies for missing this.

Ok let us start with this new update:

This is the second time I see the "variable refresh rate" setting say it enhances DirectX 11 games and I am not sure where that info is coming from.

From what I understand, this is what the toggle does.

Firstly, it only affects UWP programs*. Turning the "Variable refresh rate" setting on or off makes no difference whatsoever to most programs and games people use. It only affects a certain type of programs most commonly installed through the Microsoft Store. If your game or program doesn't come from the Microsoft store, changes are the setting doesn't do anything.

The reason why this toggle exist is because in the beginning, UWP programs did not support variable refresh rate. If you used an UWP program, G-Sync and FreeSync would simply not work, plan and simple. Then after a while, Microsoft added a new API which allowed UWP programs to take advantage of variable refresh rates. The problem was that developers had to implement this API in their programs or else it still wouldn't work. Basically, developers had to add a few lines of code which said "hey, this program want to take advantage of variable refresh rate!".

When you flip the "variable refresh rate" toggle mentioned in the OP, Windows forces all UWP programs to use variable refresh rate, regardless of if the developer has specified it being supported or not.

Benefit: You get variable refresh rate even if the developer hasn't updated their program to take advantage of the VRR API for UWP programs.

Drawback: Since it's Windows forcing new features into old programs it might break stuff, so therefore it's disabled by default.

And again:
THIS IS ONLY FOR UWP PROGRAMS! The toggle has no effect on win32 programs*.

Also, I am pretty sure this feature was included in 1903.

*The reason for the * after "it only affects UWP programs" is because some of the built in Windows overlay stuff uses the UWP framework. I am not sure which ones exactly, but I think the gamebar is one of them. What this means is that if you used a Win32 game and then used the built in Windows gamebar, it could disable VRR (if Microsoft didn't flag the gamebar as VRR compatible using the new API). But the point still stands that this has only ever been a problem if you:

1) Use UWP programs

AND

2) Those programs haven't been updated with the new API (and by new I mean a few years old at this point).

AND

3) Your system is VRR capable and it is enabled.

It was in and out, in and out, in and out...(at least on the Insider program between builds) I don't even know anymore... now it is supposed to be "officially" in.
