Can I put a LGA 1151 v2 cpu in a LGA 1151 motherboard?

Hi, I'm new here and thinking about upgrading my pc with a new cpu. And I would want to upgrade it with a LGA 1151 v2 cpu, but my motherboard has a LGA 1151 socket.

Is the LGA 1151 v2 cpu compatible with a 1151 motherboard?

Thanks in advance!

LGA 1151v1 = 6th & 7th gen CPU's = 100 and 200 series motherboards

LGA 1151v2 = 8th and 9th gen CPU's = 300 series motherboards

One won't work with the other. (of course someone will mention certain BIOS hacks, but that is not reliable enough to call a genuine method).

If you mean putting a 8000/9000 series CPU in a 100/200 series board, then it won't work.

You could try BIOS mods to make it "work", but it's a pretty janky solution and overall isn't worth the hassle imo.

Ok, well I have a H110M-HDV R3.0 motherboard. Is that a 100/200 series or 300 series? It's 100/200 series isn't it.

Its a 100 series board indeed.

Correct.

It is given in the motherboard model name (e.g. H110).

Both still LGA 1151 in physical shape and size...BUT...

Quote

The LGA 1151 socket was revised for the Coffee Lake generation CPUs and comes along with the Intel 300-series chipsets.[31] While physical dimensions remain unchanged, the updated socket reassigns some reserved pins, adding power and ground lines to support the requirements of 6-core and 8-core CPUs. The new socket also relocates the processor detection pin, breaking compatibility with earlier processors and motherboards. As a result, desktop Coffee Lake CPUs are officially not compatible with the 100 (original Skylake) and 200 (Kaby Lake) series chipsets.[32] Similarly, 300 series chipsets officially only support Coffee Lake and are not compatible with Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs.

Socket 1151 rev 2 is sometimes also referred to as "1151-2".
