how to fix smart hard disk error

I was given an HP be laptop and it wont boot it keeps saying SMART HARD DISK ERROR 

can i fix it without changing the HDD?

No, no you can't. The drive is failing. Time for replacement

S.M.A.R.T stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology. Basically the HDD is monitoring itself for errors. If an error is detected, that means the drive is most likely about to fail. So yeah, time for backups and start thinking about replacing it.

SMART is literally early warning system telling when drive is failing. So no.

Changing the drive is the only option as a SMART error means that there is a major issue with the drive and it is going to fail either in days, weeks, months or even in a few seconds.

 

Considering the BIOS is halting on the SMART (and if it won't proceed any further) error it would mean that the drive is already beyond help and if data needs to be extracted from it, it will have to be sent off to a specailist data recovery company (which isn't going to be cheap) to recover whatever data is still recoverable.
