Which monitor is more future proof 27" 4K (60Hz) or 27" 2K (144Hz)?

Hi everyone.

I would like to ask for your opinion, regarding a monitor, which I would like to buy. My main plan is to have it future proof for 4-6 years. My main purpose is to use it mainly for browsing, multimedia, and casual gaming (GTA V, StarCraft 2, Doom, Witcher 3, Fifa 20, Mass Effect 1-2-3, Star Wars The fallen order, etc). I like to play games with high to ultra settings, the GPU which I am intended to use is RTX 2070 series or Radeon 5700 XT series.
My idea is that if the 4K is going to be the winner from your side, then the gaming is going to be used on FullHD, even so I have 4K monitor.

I don't think "future proofing" a monitor makes sense. It's not like the monitor is going to be too slow to run newer titles like a CPU/GPU would. Neither 4K or 144 Hz are something that is really required, unless e.g. you're editing 4K footage or want to play competitive games. So I would say go with whichever monitor makes the most sense to you right now. Unless you can predict the future it's hard to say if 4K is "good enough" for you 5 years down the line.

Thank you for your reply. "Future proofing" in my context was, that when I am gonna buy the upper mentioned GPU's I am not going to invest in GPU for like 2-3 years from now on. So if I am going to stick with the GPU the the monitor is going to be it's buddy. So when I really like to push the titles upper mentioned on ultra to high presets (settings), then I wanted to know with multimedia, movies, browsing included which of those monitor is going to be better for me. Because I don't really see the option for those GPU's to push FPS to 120-144 like to monitors are capable.

Gotcha. As far as gaming is concerned, I think 4K and 144 Hz have the same "problem": If you want to use the full potential of your monitor you'll always need a capable GPU (or play older titles)

 

The advantage of 4K would be that it can be a benefit for tasks other than games, while 144 Hz isn't really needed for normal desktop use. So in that sense I suppose 4K would be more future proof.

Well I am not a hardcore gamer anymore. Just casual. Maybe 1-3 hours some day in a week, but not everyday and not all the time. In my initial post I have described the idea of the use of the monitor.

You don't need ti be. Just browsing, scrolling already feels better on like 144Hz monitor. 4K is extremely demanding anyway. Though you mentioned you'd game on 1080p? The 1440p 144Hz would be the best to get now as balanced spec wise and something to last you.

I am a 4k gamer and with the current top hard to play games I am lucky to get 60fps with an overclocked 2080 ti and a 5ghz CPU.

That is 59fps average on RDR 2 and 61fps average on AC:O.

I expect games to get harder going by the new console specs so 4k will get harder to do.

 

All my 4k monitors were not good at displaying 1080p and my VA 4k monitor is not even good for 1440p. So dropping the resolution to get good performance is not on opinion on them. 

 

The only future proofed 4k monitor worth having is not a monitor at all but a 2019 plus 4k LG OLED TV.   It does 4k 60hz now and 1440p 120hz. 

It does 1080p, 1440p and 4k equally well and is G-sync compatible. 

They are the only displays I would buy for entertainment and the only downside is the cost(so far).

Yeah I was gaming on 1080p, usually it was good. Once I had a gtx 780 in SLI, long time ago
