USB C stopped working with external monitor

JennMY48

ASUS laptop running Windows 10 (up to date) with 2 identical display- and power-enabled USB C ports has been hooked up to two ASUS external monitors for months with no problems until today.  No hardware changes, no system updates that I know of. Now right port will only recognize power and USB hub/mouse and will NOT recognize EITHER display, and the left port recognize power, USB hub with wireless mouse and whichever monitor I try (just as before). When a display is plugged into the right port I sometimes get a "display connection might be limited" message from windows, which yields very little help when googled. I've explored several menus and tried to reinstall USB drivers, but it doesn't seem to have worked. restarted computer, swapped cables, etc, no luck. Any thoughts?
