external laptop gpu?

Snowarch

ill be upgrading to a p104-100 8gb if all goes well, but i play a few lan games so having a second strong-gpu system for friend to use would be nice. my current gpu is a p106-100 6gb fan cooled.

i plan to use the p-106-100 with the my ubuntu laptop in prime like i do on my main rig. i have a useless thunderbolt port on my laptop, and 2 frequently used usb normal slots, so could i uae this for the p106 gpu? anyone know of something like whats in the link with thunderbolt? my laptop has a 1.1ghz quadcore celeron cpu, yes, there is a vary slight bottleneck but good enough. has 8gb ram.

P106-100 seems an odd way to me to describe a GPU, though possibly an excellent one.  I’m not sure what card you’re describing which likely simply says more about me than you.  What I can say is the thunderbolt egpu system has quite limited bandwidth and a high amount of lag.   The most powerful gpu I’ve heard of being used effectively in egpu boxes were vega56es on Mac mini’s specifically for arts work.  They were faster than the bandwidth allotment which maxes out in the rx580 range, but the Vega56 has compute capability that was needed for the specific application so they got used anyway.  Issues you will want to look at are size requirements, power requirements for the card in question compared to the egpu box you are looking at.  You CAN put a card that can drastically exceed the bandwidth capacity of thunderbolt, but the card can’t exceed the bandwidth of the cable, so above a certain level there are no additional returns.  The 720p video setting is a hard limit for the built in screen, but the high settings thing could be cpu or gpu related.  Laptops sometimes limit total possible resolution to that which their built in monitor has via custom software, so I don’t know if an external monitor would allow larger resolution or not.  It would be dependent on the model of laptop.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

You want to use a mining gpu as an external card? Sure that can work. It's at a gtx 1060 level and that is about as far as you can go with current gen thunderbolt before it starts to bottlneck a card hard. However your celeron is not going to be playing any modern games as that is just super weak. Also what celeron laptop has a thunderbolt port?

Also the thing you linked is not using thunderbolt?

@Bombastinator Well, what he is using is actually a card that carries this name. It is a special mining card based on the GP104 chip without video outputs.

The solution you picked out actually seems to be some Mini PCIe adapter, I would go for a Thunderbolt solution since your laptop actually seems to have one. Can we hear more about the laptop you are using? How would a cheapo Intel Celeron based laptop actually have Thunderbolt? Or are you confusing it with a regular Type-C port?

I got the impression outputless mining cards were exceptionally difficult to deal with and that major and massive hackery had to be performed.  Is it as simple as using an egpu?

lemme explain. no hacking was done. my desktop board... i simply installed the os did a software center update, turned system off threw in p106, boom it works after swapping to nvidiadriver. linux is not windows so no hack needed.

linux logic: does it have a fan is it not friend? okay ill run it!

so as long as the gpu can connect to the laptop we are good.

i need a thunderbolt connector version of the thing i linked.

the idea is the thunderbolt gpu dock will allow me to use the p106 on laptop's screen. or use the laptop's hdmi to put it to external like desktop does in prime. can some one please recommend an adapter like one i linked with thunderbolt?
