I was catching up on my personal email this morning when I noticed this email:

I was curious about it and I decided to read more about this. It turns out that Google has been gifting out 3 month free trials to Youtube Premium subscribers.

I was never really followed Stadia that closely and, personally, I'm not that interested in cloud gaming at the time. Then I realized that the only other way to get Stadia is to pay $129 for the "Premiere Edition." So I thought, what the heck, why not. When you redeem the code, you do have to give Google a credit card but, it is not charged until the the 3 month trial is up. After that you have to pay the normal $9.99 subscription fee. What surprised me even more is that the trial comes with 9 games for free. I don't know if every trial is coming with the same games or not, but my trial came with the following: Destiny 2: The Collection, GRID, GYLT, Serious Sam Collection, Spitlings, Stacks On Stacks (On Stacks), SteamWorld Dig 2, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gigamech, and Thumper.

What's interesting about this is, as the Android Headlines article is reporting that:

Apparently, according to most articles, the majority of these trials were being given to people with Youtube Premium in the UK. However, I am in the US and I got the email almost 24 hours ago.

There are no real reports on how Google is determining who gets these trials right now. It could be random. However, if I had to speculate, I'd guess that Google is choosing people who watch, or have shown interest in gaming and tech related content on Youtube (because the most definitely have that data). This would make sense because I bet Google is hoping to get people, like myself, who had no interest in Stadia (let alone paying $129 for it) to give the service a chance and then hope they continue to pay for the service once the trial is up.

 

Anyways, that's all there really is for this topic. There isn't really a lot of information about this as of now.

If anybody else received a trial offer, reply to this thread. I'm curious to to see how many people are receiving these offers.

 

Let me know if I missed anything or got anything incorrect.

I got the offer as well, but will not use it as Stadia is hot garbage and having to buy the games to use on that platform only is even worse.

Googles been offering some of their physical products for premium users, like google nest, from time to time. Guess the Stadia controller has been added.

I honestly can't understand how anyone thought it would take off, least of all professionals within the gaming sphere.

Well, I am sure as heck isn't getting it because there's no Google Stadia in our country.

 

Fortunately, Parsec is a thing and I have a computer so I can still play Baba Is You while on the train and get remotely destroyed in The Division by the latency.

Even if I got it too since I'm also a YT premium user, I still wouldn't use it for the simple fact that I would have to buy the games I already own again in order to make use of it. They really need to rethink that business model.

Who's stupid enough to buy games AGAIN on a platform that's probably going to be killed off in a year or two because of that very reason. Not to mention just being absolute garbage to begin with with astronomic latency and I was reading bullshit about "negative ping or negative lag" or whatever bullshit was going around how awesome Google it is at negating latency. They have fuck ton of data centers all over the world and they are still by far the worst offering when it comes to remote gaming.

 

Not to mention whole industry needs to fix the licensing thing. Like, if I bought a game, it shouldn't matter whether it's running on my system or on some other. What matters is am I playing the game or someone else? Which is why I kinda feel NVIDIA's struggle with GeForce NOW service and all the licensing fuckery they are facing. It's not like anyone has stolen anything, they just cache game files which are useless until player with license joins and re-uses files instead of waiting for it to install in next 6 hours if lucky. But yeah, who's stupid enough to buy anything on Stadia. No wonder they are handing it out for free, it's useless in its own form.

Doesn't appear to be the controller, just the service.

 

² Stadia Controller and Google Chromecast Ultra are required for play on TVs.

 

I got the offer, but don't have the controller so won't be bothering with it.

They are not going to fix it. Companies/devlopers/"artists" like those who make The Long Dark are in it for the money and fame only. They don't care about the customer, the one paying them money.

They'll have to because this shit just doesn't fly by any metric. They are then not selling the license to the game to USER, but to the system it's being run on. Which is bullshit and just sounds stupid by itself. What, when you change the system you're not allowed to run the game anymore because it's not the same system as initially? We had that shit with game activations and thankfully that garbage died, even if I need to now use terrible EA Origin instead. At least I can re-install the frigging game as many times as I want and not just 5 times and then it shits itself to death and you need to talk to tech support... Dumbest times ever.

I got the email. But at this point I’m finding gaming more as a chore than actually enjoying it..

Some people hate on the idea of Stadia and say it's not practical but geForce Now was much better back in 2017 than Stadia is now

So do you get a free google Chrome or Google Stadia controller with this offer? Or do you have to use it in the browser only?

 

Also, it is clear that the service is not being used by many people, and they are getting desperate for some people to start adopting it and buying games in their store. I think the ship has sailed. They had way too much negative reviews in the first few weeks to ever recover from it. This service will forever be regarded a joke. Unless they change something drastically, like offering a subscription with free games included, like Xbox game pass for PC does.

 

If this continues much longer, they will kill it off, I am sure.

I got it also and i got excited for a second but then i remembered you have to buy the games at an inflated cost from google to play it and you can't play the games anywhere else
