Old GTX 980 not working

My neighbor gave me his old MSI GTX 980 4GD5T OC and i wanted to put it into my computer. However, whenever i do, my motherboard (the B450 tomahawk max) tells me it was not detected or failed. My monitor gives me a message to power down and unplug it. Does it just need to be updated, or is something wrong with the card?

I have a Ryzen 5 3600x, 16 gigs of DDR4 3600 ram, 1 terabyte of hardrive storage, a 600 watt bronze power supply,and a 1080p monitor.

does the card work in your neighbors computer or anywhere else?

I believe it worked in his computer, but i don't have another computer to test it in.
