CPU (9700k) "popped" out of the socket when installing (Maximus XI Hero) NEED HELP!

Hi guys. I didn't seem to get any luck on Reddit, so I'm trying here to see if I can get any help, because I'm getting very nervous/concerned.

I've built a few computers for me, my friends, and my family over the past several years; I'm not an expert at it by any means, but I have gotten comfortable working with parts. However, when I was installing my CPU (i7 9700k) into my Asus Maximus XI HERO, something very concerning happened.

When I was pulling down the little lever, there was a fair amount of resistance behind it. And then all of a sudden, there was a very loud "POP" and the black CPU cover that comes with the motherboard went flying. And the CPU was sitting awkwardly out of the socket of the motherboard.

It looks like there's damage to the sides of the CPU, where the latch covers it, which I'm very worried about, and I'm very, very worried at this point.

Attached are some pictures.

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

Thank you!

Just reinstall it (check for bent pins) you're more likely to have damaged the socker than the cpu.  not much point caring about a scratch on the copper heat spreader

Boot outside the case before you finish installing everything see if it posts.

As long as you DONT TOUCH THE PINS ON THE BOARD... or bend any pins, you should be good.

Frickin Linus video with blindfold build gave me nightmares for WEEKS.

Looks like you didn't install the cpu properly into the slot before you tried to lock it.
Rule number one, there is never much resistance when installing the cpu, so it'd probably considered damaged by user.
check the bottom of the cpu and the socket pins for damage, the mount is just there to hold the cpu, but a cooler can do the same job
try to get a return, but most retailers will not refund you in this situation from my experience in retail
you may be able to get it to work, but actually check that there's no visible damage before you set both parts on fire.

Thank you for the responses guys. I'll try to answer these as best I can.

As for the retention bracket, @TrigrH what do you mean its fucked; can you tell that something is wrong with it?

I thought I installed the CPU correctly. I made sure everything was lined up correctly. From what I see, the CPU is fine other than the damage to the metal lid, but unfortunately there are three bent pins all in one area. If I can't get a return with it, what should I do?

I'm fairly confident I installed the CPU properly though. I made sure when I was installing it that the little triangle went to the right edge, and it seemed to line up properly.

If I do get the response that it "wasn't damaged by us", unfortunately, what will my options be then? I would rather not be out a lot of money, but it seems that might be the case?

To buy another motherboard, by all means it looks like you screwed up mate, take it on the chin and replace it.

I’ve installed a cpu on that exact same motherboard. Ive never felt so much resistance pulling down the retention arm lever. It was very unsettling, and when it was locked in place the tabs that hold the cpu in place seemed off center to the point one side barely contacted the edge of the cpu.

I almost wonder if Asus didnt install the thing perfectly and maybe it wasnt just that particular motherboard and you encountered one that was even worse.
