NAS Hard Drive For Playing/Storing Movies

jcronic420

A 6TB NAS HDD is $170. A 2TB HDD is $100. My question is there a reason I can't use a NAS HDD for playing movies on my pc. Online I keep seeing nas is more expensive (but its not) and more used for 24/7 use. So shouldn't a nas hdd be more reliable over time than a traditional hdd? I plan to turn my pc off every other day/sometimes everyday. I would like more space than my current two 2tb hybrid drives. Will also be using ssd for operating system. Thanx

NAS drives are just built to a better standard with a few special features designed so they work well with a few drives next to them.

right now I'd probably just grab a 5tb x300 or by an external drive and pull the case off

No.

I don't know what prices you're comparing, on amazon.com I see "normal" 2tb HDDs going for $50 or less. If you plan on storing any programs on it make sure you get a 7200rpm drive at least though.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

There's nothing wrong with using a NAS drive over say a WD Blue or WD Green desktop drive. They're rated for higher operating hours and although it is considered that repeated spinning up/down of a drive may cause unnecessary wear that wear would be the same regardless of NAS or desktop series of drive so there's really no reason you can't do what you're looking to.
