If you can't beat 'em, buy em - Intel starts talks to acquire AMD despite monopoly concerns

Summary:

Intel has started talks for acquiring AMD, despite previous concerns about a PC processor monopoly. Intel points to Samsung, Apple, and ARM as potential competitors in the processor space.

Quotes/Excerpts:

Quote

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has started talks about a potential merger with AMD (NASDAQ: AMD), despite previous concerns about potential monopolistic issues. CNBC spoke to a number of analysts about the possibility. “I think this was a landmark event,” Kevin Krewell, a principal analyst at Tirias Research, told CNBC. Despite previous concerns, Intel points to ARM as a credible player in both the conventional server and consumer PC space, enough to be considered an actual threat to Intel’s market dominance and citing Apple's recent decision to adopt the architecture. Regardless, regulators around the world will have an interesting decision in the upcoming months. Intel has already sniped more than a few members of AMD’s GPU team to start with (and AMD isn’t going to sell off the IP that keeps it inside the Xbox and PlayStation). Intel has missed repeatedly on 10nm and those misses have had a significant impact on the company’s roadmaps for new products. This is a fact. It has also spent billions of dollars positioning itself to respond more adroitly to new emerging markets in 5G, IoT, self-driving cars, AI, and a host of computing-adjacent spaces. Intel, which previously dominated the PC and server CPU space, is looking for new markets. Meanwhile, AMD has been busy winning large shares for itself. AMD’s Ryzen design has dramatically won it new sales in consumer markets and servers, while Intel’s push into IoT, AI, and 5G are all less certain because these markets are themselves much newer. Regardless of which company you favor or whose CPUs you use, there’s no arguing that the firms are now somewhat differently positioned when it comes to where they believe their own future revenue growth will come from, and Intel is hoping their roadmaps are significantly different enough. Only time will tell.

My Thoughts:

I doubt this will happen, while I believe ARM, Apple, and Samsung are well off as chip makers, breaking into the Desktop market will be a significant challenge for all companies. I could see maybe if Intel only buys a specific market of AMD, such as their GPU division, Server Division, or another part of the company, but above all else, I don't think this'll happen because this is an April Fools post.

That's like Pepsi buying Coke. Both good drinks, but only in their own right. No way this happens. But you know what this means? Intel has nothing. AMD was so far behind for so long, Intel slacked off and never suspected AMD would make it this far. Now that it's happened, Intel has absolutely nothing to show for all those wasted years. They just need to focus more on R&D and focus more on making a worthy opponent at a competitive price.

EDIT: this feels like an April fools joke...

April Fool :)

What surprises me is that whilst I already knew no one bothers to read the source articles, no one even bothered to read your post or even quickly browse the source article.

And the odd person after your post and all the coments pointing out it is a joke and we still have the occasional serious post.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
