CPU VS GTX 1650 SUPER VS RTX 2060 SUPER for recording locally using OBS

Roy.Z

Hello friends,

I'm really lost and would really appreciate your help. I'd like to record training videos of capturing my desktop screen with a camera input through a capture card overlaid on it and chroma keyed using OBS. .

I only intend to record locally and never stream. also, I'll be recording graphic design programs, never game-play.
I might still need to record in 60fps, I don't know yet, I'll have to test it, I'm just figuring out the specs I need for a new workstation PC I'll build around the Ryzen 3700x CPU.
I'm also considering the Nvidia GTX 1650 SUPER or the RTX 2060 SUPER cards for a GPU as they both use the Touring architecture with the newer NVENC.

I am looking for the best video quality I could get and the smallest file sizes as I'll have those videos for streaming later on as vod. so I've learned I have two options:

1. I could use the CPU to record in real-time using x264 veryfast or faster in a very good quality which will result in large files but will not slow down the computer's performance and while having the graphics card just handle OBS's work and the display.

In this case, I could get the GTX 1650 SUPER if it's necessary (or even an inferior card). but then again, I guess I will have really large files so I'll need to re-encode them to make them smaller (using handbrake for example),
so then maybe I would need a better card like the RTX 2060 SUPER to encode the video faster? in this case, will the videos suffer in quality compared to using the CPU as the re-encoding will be done using NVENC instead?

or should I re-encode a file using the CPU again and let it process it as much as it needs to? then I won't need to get a powerful card at all? or it will take much more time using the CPU and I better go with NVENC?

2. To record the video from the beginning using a GTX 1650 SUPER card or an RTX 2060 SUPER using NVENC for encoding.

In this case, I don't know if the quality of the videos would be as high as it could be using the CPU. but it could save me time if I won't need to re-encode the video files later on.
if the difference in quality using the CPU and the GPU will be negligible, do you think I should get the GTX 1650 SUPER or the RTX 2060 SUPER for this job? will there be a big time difference for encoding?

I would really appreciate your help as I really don't know what to do, Thanks a lot in advance :)

Roy.

nvenc encoding is pretty good, you won't need to re encode them. all the cards with the new NVENC encoder, encode the same. a 2060 records the same quality as a 2080ti. now which cars have them. I'll go look but not all do.

the 1650 super does as well. the only 16/20 card not to is the OG 1650

Thanks friends, I know they all have the new NVENC encoder, from GTX 1650 and up..

GTX 1650 Super
GTX 1660
GTX 1660 Super
GTX 1660 Ti
RTX 2060
RTX 2060 Super
RTX 2070
RTX 2070 Super
RTX 2080

RTX 2080 Super
RTX 2080 Ti

But I'm not sure if the CPU wont be enough for my purpose with a simple GPU so I wont need a good GPU like this at all, as I'm not sure if I should go with way #1 or way #2 I've listed above..

And if I do need a good GPU, I don't know which one will meet that minimum requirement, how powerful (which model) it should be.

Thanks again!

yep the hardware onboard is identical

Thanks for letting me know, I understand now, but wont a better card with more CUDA cores or higher bitrate and faster Mhz- encode faster? or it's not related?

not at all related.

there is special silicon (asic) that just does encoding and decoding. that is all it does.

omg man... I'm shocked to know that.. you've solved my puzzle! I'll get the 1650 SUPER then and just experiment with CPU and GPU recordings and see what works best.

Could you maybe just comment on my CPU? do you think it will be good enough? or I could benefit from a better one for my purpose? like the 3800x or the 3900x? for recording with OBS again..

Thanks so much!

they'd be stupid to change and spend effort on a diffrent one.

a 3700x is plenty.

3800x is just an OC. a 3900x would be an upgrade but no one you need.

Thank you so much, and thanks for the link,

I know this guy and I've watched a few videos of his already but I just got to this interesting video for my purpose:
AMD BEATS EVERYTHING! (Including themselves...) AMD Ryzen 3700x & 3900X Content Creation Performance

I also have a question about RAM if you want to take a look :)

Thank you so much again!

Roy.
