Is my Internet good enough for online games?

Hey guys!

 

I just moved from the Sacramento area to an area about an hour away and I'm wondering if the internet at my new house is good enough for online gaming like my old house?

Here are my benchmark results from speedtest.net.

Forgive my internet ignorance, Im just not sure what speeds are good/bad for download/upload.

I  mean why not test it? Lots of free multiplayer games? You can't tell how well games will play from a speed test as there are lots more variables like how routing is setup to the game servers.

 

But that speed test result is pretty good.

If I had done a benchmark at my old house I could compare them but I didn't so I'm not sure how this compares.

Oh ok thanks! Nah I play online games that cost money to buy but I dont want to have lag or slow speeds where I start teleporting all over and ruining other people's play.

With a plan like that not only could you host your own server if you wanted, you could host multiple at once.

 

It's more than sufficient.

I was being sarcastic haha , it's really good! Were I live we only just got 150mb/s internet in my neighborhood, which is considered fast, you have nearly gigabit internet so extremely fast.

Ohhh ok. I wasnt sure if maybe since I moved I needed to call Comcast and upgrade or if this was sufficient.

The download speed looked fast to me but then compared to 41MB upload speed I thought there might be a problem there.

See, your written voice sounds incredibly condescending.  When you pair that with an almost ungodly (for normal consumers) internet speed and this kind of unnecessary bait question, it comes of as an enormous epeen flex.

Also, if I dont know how to interpret the speed and numbers how am I supposed to be aware that it's "ungodly"?

If I had known the answer I wouldnt have asked the question. For all I know there could be people who have 2,000 MB/s download & 1,800 MB/s upload.

There's no such thing as an "unncessary question". If someone has a question they should ask it. Like I did.

How else are people supposed to learn?

It's common for ISPs to not supply high upload bandwidths to people in residential housing as most people don't upload much but download exponentially more. It's also often a hardware limitation in the modem as there's usually not as many upstream channels. >40mbit is more than sufficient for playing games or even hosting his own games if he ever wanted to.

Upload speeds are almost never past 50mb/s so this is normal!

If you ever got into twitch streaming or the like your upload is >4x the required bandwidth to stream at 1080p 60fps. This means theoretically four people could stream off your connection all at once at those settings without noticeable impact from one another. Your upload is really good for just about anything game related you could want to do.

Those speeds above are faster tho... it's numbers. 940.58 > 599.29, and 41.22 > 17.94. Really easy to understand. And once you understand that, if stuff is still moving slower, you then know it's not your internet speeds that are the issue, and you can ask the question from another (and probably less "e-peen flex" sounding) angle. Like, why are the Steam servers being so slow? Is there a way to switch them (there is) or something else to get Steam to download games faster?

As in your first post comes off as someone talking to a puppy they found on the side of the road and are giddily waiting to see how the dumb little thing will play along to you game

 

Also, calling me some BS on the "it took hours to download a game" 

600mbs could download 200gb in 45 minutes, so even the biggest games ever made would take less than an hour (should those numbers be truthful) and the additional 50% speedbump you have now is effectively meaningless for consumers

I will say this, your Ping time is really 99% of what makes everything seem fast.  Your actually speed is awesome, but someone with 10% (heck, I'll even go as low as 1%) of your speed and a 10ms (10/1000th of a second) Ping time will pretty much have the same exact online game experience.   

 

In other words, if your speed stayed the same, but your ping was over 100ms, then your actual connection would be considered poor, even though you can download data really really fast.

Basically I just want to be able to download games relatively quickly and play in online games like DBD without having lag spikes regularly.

Ive played in games with people who have poor internet speeds and I end up teleporting around the map and having my actions delayed.
