Nvme showing up as gen2x2 instead of 3x4

So I finally got everything figured out clean installed windows on my new fancy SSD. All to find out that it’s running in gen 2x2. I have a MSI x99a SLI plus motherboard with an i7-5820k. Whenever I try to set my m.2 source link to auto the system won’t boot. I saw a couple people recommended reinstalling but that’s the absolute last thing I want to do. I really hope someone can help me figure this out without pulling my hair out
