Distributed F@H Network Explodes in Popularity AND Power ~500 PFLOPS!!!

Quote

Propelled by average enthusiasts in their shared quest to defeat COVID-19, the Folding@Home network is now pushing out 470 PetaFLOPS of raw compute power. To put that in perspective, that's twice as fast as Summit, the world's fastest supercomputer, making the network faster than any known supercomputer. It's also faster than the top seven supercomputers in the world, combined.

Quote

Folding@Home reports that it has seen a 1,200% increase in contributors, with Bitcoin miners also joining the fight, and over 400,000 new volunteers have joined over the last two weeks.

Unfortunately, that massive surge in demand has led to a shortage of work units (the small chunks of larger workloads sent to each user), but those units are still being issued and many more are in the pipeline.

Some good news for humanity out there as increased topic broadening and public desire to do whatever they can to help scientists understand and potentially prevent COVID-19 has led to an explosion of resources available in the distributed fight.

Personally, last time I tried to use F@H my computer was perpetually unstable, but I wholeheartedly appreciate and admire the effort by our fellow enthusiasts.

According to @LinusTech he has something in the works with both his ISP and some of his other partners like @seagate_surfer to help on the server side as the Folding@Home project is struggling quite a bit with their current solution. Obviously I don’t have any of the specifics, but he did mention it in the last WAN Show which is absolutely terrific. I’d like to thank both Linus and the rest of the crew. This is a trying time around the World and it’s nice to see people helping others in any way they can.

That's absolutely awesome stuff. I need to go back and listen to that topic.

Next time I'm at my Mum's, I'm going to be getting my HD7970 out of storage. It's a bit better at folding than my old go-to, the 650ti.

As of the latest update the LTT team earned 164,775,805 points, or 10.15% of the total points earned that update.

If the LTT team is producing 10% of the overall production, does that mean the LTT team is producing almost 50TFLOPS? 🤔

I'm uncertain, but this could be the true meaning of "Pride and Accomplishment" as opposed to what EA was talking about.

well, I've got a 660ti and a rx580 with my 2700.

I don't have a box I can run my 970 in unless I buy some dual 6 to 8 pin adapters. then my poor core 2 duo folding machine can have 2 good GPUs in it

I've got a Core 2 Duo for ya. For giggles I am going to allow it to finish this work unit.

it isn't folding. It is just going to get the 2 best GPUs I have and just sit there and host the OS.

Hey now, It may not be doing much but it's working hard getting somewhere at least (yes I know you weren't talking about mine lol).

It would be a cheap and easy way to host some GPU's. Just be mindful that depending on the GPUs they may actually get held back by the CPU. I have a system with a 8320e and two Nvidia T4s and they are overall about 20 percent less productive than were when they were in another system.

Ha same. I was surprised how good my RX 480 is at folding than my CPU. Kinda' like mining I guess.

Out of curiosity, what kind of points per day are you seeing with the 5700? I lowered power limit on my RX 480 to not heat up my room too much, but at full power it seems to be getting well over 400,000. Right now it's showing ~360,000 at -40% power.

Only thing is, it spends quite a bit of time trying to get new work units rather than actually folding..

My reference XFX 5700 is riding right around 900k ppd...sometimes it's over 1M, but largely stays at 900k or so. On another note, I've set the fan profile to keep the temp around 55-60C, and it does, but I'm seeing only 3-5% usage in task manager.
