Best store solution

I'm staring to get some kind of panic over loosing information because of drive failure.

i currently have a machine with decent specs, not up to date but works good.

CPU: i5-3570

16 gb ram ddr3 1333MHZ

p8Z77 mb

SSD1: 250GB (os)

HDD1: 500GB

HDD2: 250GB

2060 GPU (SHOULD NOT MATTER)

I really don't want to get a NAS, but I'm not closed mind into not getting one, just that the computer is always on so i don't see why get more HW.

what would be the best way into getting some redundancy and maybe write speed? i am willing into getting new HDD's (2 or 4).

do i need virtualization of some kind? or just software?

I'm a bit lost.

Thanks,

3-2-1... 3 backups, 2 locations, one of them offsite

That's usually what I hear for data backup if you have stuff you are really worried about losing.  Now, most people don't do this (myself included) level of backup, but even just an external hard drive you back up important files to once a month and keep in your house somewhere is better than nothing.  You could even get a single drive with a couple TB of space and install it into your existing machine, then just copy data from the other drives over to it as backup.  There are a number of different ways to backup stuff you're really concerned about.  Depending on total size of files renting cloud storage space may be another option.

A NAS with RAID configured is the better option for home, but depending on if you are looking for just archival capabilities or daily read/write/working performance will determine how that gets configured.  Not my area of knowledge though, so I can't really recommend anything beyond just saying that it's an option.  The benefit of NAS vs. your existing always on computer is that if your PC gets damaged for whatever reason (power surge, PSU failure, water, whatever...) then your data is not physically located in the same box and has a lower chance of being lost.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

Get rid of the two smaller HDDs. They're likely super old. Replace with a 1TB HDD.

Depending on what it is, back it up to the cloud.

You can also get an external HDD and have the internal HDD back up to that.

Then you'd have 2 copies locally, and one copy off site.

If you're super paranoid you could make another copy, but honestly I think that's a little overkill for most situations. Generally the cloud and another physical is good enough.

I use cheap WD Passports for backups. I have gotten 1 and 2 tb drives of the price of a game($60 for 2tb now in US).

The next one I buy will be 4tbs. They are $129 now but I have seen them go for around $70 on Black friday.

I don't use special software to copy files. I just use the mouse.

I have never had one fail yet but they are only spinning when I need something from them and that is rare.
