Wentai Aidan - the closest we got to ax1600i so far

LukeSavenije

Source: Techpowerup

About 2 years ago, in 2018, we got the Flextronics Churchill, best known as Corsair AX1600i on the market, topping many charts and becoming in what is in my eyes the best consumer PSU to this day. But recently Wentai Lighting, a relatively unknown Taiwanese OEM/ODM for LED luminaries has made it's debut with ATX PSUs with it's Aidan line, ranging from 777w to 1616w. It won't sell it's PSUs to the consumer market, but will rather wait for a vendor to produce for.

The most special thing about the Aidan is the PFC (Power factor correction), as it uses a special sort of way. This is called a totem-pole bridgeless converter. the main advantage of this is efficiency. Most high-efficiency PSUs that use a bridgeless APFC converter have an efficiency level of up to 96%, which is already very impressive, but a totem-pole allows to be up to 99% efficient. So far this design has only been used on one other consumer PSU, being the AX1600i.

The power is distributed over four 12v rails, of each 33.66 amps, totalling at 1616 watts.

in_top1.jpg

The fan itself is actually a bit interesting, as they used a Crown double ball bearing fan with a rating of 1.02a, which is very high, especially for a high-efficiency PSU. It's a fairly overkill thing to do from Wentai and might not even be seen in the end product from a vendor. with noise levels up to 52.5 dBA this isn't exactly a quiet PSU on high loads.

with an average 20-100% efficiency of 94.875% against the 94.953% of ax1600i this is a fairly impressive PSU, but still slightly behind AXi.

Because of Wentai not selling it themselves availability is for now unknown, while pricing is expected to match or exceed ax1600i's current pricing for the 1616w model, but it's hard to say for the other models as we don't know how far Wentai scaled them down.

It's a very interesting PSU that'll certainly will be a good buy, the question currently only remains if it is the best buy, and by the looks of it, ax1600i remains king.

Noctua should start selling PSUs and put one of their NF-A12 fans into that beast of a PSU.

I'd buy it. 😛

Better yet: Noctua partners up with Seasonic, then we have the ultimate PSU !

But the real question is; would Seasonic paint their PSUs beige and brown?
If not I'm not interested. 😶

They would make a chromemax edition and sell it for 10-20% more. Black paint is expensive these days....

problem is the following: PSU fans and most case fans aren't the same thing. While fans like the NF-A12 is great for your heatsink, case or radiator, it's not made like a PSU fan, which is oriented to create static pressure across the PSU. This is one of the reasons you shouldn't swap your PSUs fan for example.

actually... around 2 years ago there was an april fools article on Jonnyguru's forums about Noctua partnering up with Superflower to make a noctua brown PSU with a special "german" edition, which included 10 rather than 1 rail.

with that said, if noctua wants to slightly modifiy this PSU with a new, brown housing and one of their own fans, they could be able to. but for what I know they don't have an engineering team or even a PSU devision at this moment, which they'd need for that.

but who knows what they're hiding

I haven't seen a power supply that doesn't use some sort of standard case fan in years.

I can't imagine there being much, if not any, difference between PSU fans and case fans.

it could be me, but i generally don't see the same hong hua/globe/YL/and so forth fan in cases, as they're optimized for a certain workload. just like you want more pressure oriented fans on your radiator for example

from the outside there seems to be little difference, but the inside there's more different than you'd think

Noctua sales all kinds of fans. Fans designed for air flow for cases, others for static pressure, and other which is a balance of both. In PWM and non-PWM versions.

While I don't recommend replacing PSU fans as already they are very quiet on good PSUs, some even don't spin when the system is idle, it is dangerous to so due to the high powered cap inside which can and most likely is charged, but you'll also void your PSU long warranty. Just buy the PSU that fits your need. Noctua fans aren't cheap either.

I could be wrong, but I think Lian Li uses those sort of fans in their cases.
The ones I got with my PC-O8 a few years ago looked very much like cheap PSU fans.

They all look similar to this:

and it's not only hurtful for yourself if you touch something, but replacing the fan can even lead to it being louder in the end if you do it succesful anyways, since the circuit stays the same

I have already done it in the past. And if you wonder, It has been over 12 years and it still up and running.

The PSU in question was a custom shape one from a thin desktop Lenovo system, (Core 2 Duo). Fan was broken, and the system was already aged old, out of warranty, and even new, it was loud. They had a certain reputation of failing fans. I did replace it with a Noctua Redux fan. That said, I didn't just swap it, and call it a day.

I was able to do it, because the PSU had 2 fan speed... off (when the system is turned off), and flown blown max (12V). There was no in between fan speeds. And if there was, I would have plugged it on the Molex connector to get that max speed. I ensured that I had the equivalent or higher air flow coming out of the PSU compared to before. In my case, with the fan that I picked selected, I was able to get a notable air output from the PSU vent compared to the original fan in working order (I had access to another identical PSU in working order to compare), and fan noise at a noticeable level compared to a good as-new operating one. But that is the only situation I would consider a replacement. I mean Noctua fans are like 20-25$ here in Canada. Those aren't cheap. You can use that money to get a much nicer PSU which won't require to do any of this.

You know what puzzles me?

On coolers black paint is expensive and drives the cost up significantly.

GPU's all ship black but they have crazy premiums for white versions.
