Is there a sweet spot for threads I wonder?

Got a 12 thread currently churning on my 9900k which is on Medium so 14 threads available.  Its still getting quite toasty, but its in a Fractal Design Node 304 which really limits air intake.  I moved to dual-NVME and removed all the HDDs cages for optimal airflow and replaced all fans with higher Noctuas.  Not really much more I can do there.

To be honest, I'm not sure I trust the ASUS Z370-I VRMs to cope under full-core load for any length of time anyway.

tried various combinations, seems my CPU is full on busy with 4x4 arrangement

I have machines with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 16 thread CPUs.  Its interesting you say that as the 4 core machine does seem to have ALWAYS gotten 4 core jobs from what I've seen.  Checking the 8 core that's 100% (also the only Windows machine) and based on its PPD when I've glanced at it, I think its probably consistently been so.

Yet my server which has 6, currently set to 5, is stuck waiting on WUs right now.  I just split it to a 4 thread slot and 2 thread slot, the 2 thread slot has immediately gotten a WU, so go figure.

Is it just me, or is the supply of WUs slowing up again?

In other news, hit a milestone on the LTT folding team:

Just finished a 12 thread job and the machine has again gotten another 12 thread job.

So I changed that slot down to 12 and added a 4, immediately got a 4 thread WU (although a low credit one).

I have noticed a side effect though, my CPU tempts keeps momentarily dropping.  I think my system is power throttling as I see a dip in the core clock when that happens and its normally locked at 4.7Ghz.  It could be temps but surely one core hitting 96C would throttle that core, not all of them?

I split it up in 4x4, seems to help with WU coming in, just have it cooking more if I do

This is rather impractical use of your CPU, it might be good way of feeding your CPU with WUs, but point wise, it's not smart afaik. I'd recommend you to use your CPU on one slot or maximum two slots.

Is it better to run most of my CPU cores as one slot or to divide them among 2+ slots? I have 8 cores/16 threads in my 2700X so I've set one CPU slot to 10 threads to leave some threads free for feeding the GPU and using the computer in general. It never occurred to me that I should/could do that!

For that CPU, I'd run 1 slot just like you configured if I had planned to use that PC.

I will be writing the awards ceremony this afternoon, it is currently 1030 here so expect it in the next 12 hours or so.

I'm still trying to work out the best way to deal with 700+ prizes, as in distribution. I will probably do what I always do and ask people to DM me.

Take your time 😉

I may as well get involved with this. Ignore the horrible state of my desk, this was one I got given to me as my actual new desks delivery has been put on hold.
