Last contest I was like 130ish. Now I am 780ish. My team rank has actually gone down after a month of non-stop folding because I was overtaken by newbies who started folding last week with titans, and 2080 TI's. But I'm not bitter, not one bit, not bitter at all. no siree bob.

I've wanted a 2080Ti for a while for comparative purposes but what always stopped me was it's lack of value.

 

The other potential gotcha is not all WUs are big ones so while you might get more that 3MPPD on some you wont always which drops the effective PPD down.

 

You can roughly extrapolate the maximal PPD performance of a 2080Ti by taking your known values for cards you have and using the ratio of TFLOPs from sites like TechPowerup. I haven't found the QRB makes that significant a difference between calculated versus observed between a 2070 Super and 2080 Super.

 

The value part (PPD/$), however, is only part of what you should be considering. As Spectrum mentions another part is efficiency (PPD/W) and also other considerations such as the incremental cost of feeding it (the portion of the system overhead cost for mobo, cpu, ram, ps, case, ssd). If your just running one or two systems and want to maximize your output then the 2080Ti may make sense if you can fork out the up-front cost.

it doesnt - mining risers and motheboard setups SEVERELY limit what you can do.  Im talking about a 50-75% reduction in PPD.

 

i ended up just building rigs and using the m2 slots to bifurcate to 6 card machines.  Trying to fold on mining stuff was almost useless.

 

gorgon helped me with alot of the setup, so credit goes to him.

I can't give you any hard data as I don't own any of the mining-specific cards. Most are based on the GTX 1060 GP106 silicon (4.375 TFLOPs) so I'd guess about the same as a 1060 at 450-550kPPD but some of those could be based on the the cut-down chip used for the 3GB versions (GP106-300A - 3.935 TFLOPs)) and so would scale down about 9.5% slower ((4.375-3.935)/4.375) in performance.

 

Limited VRAM should have no impact on folding.

 

I've seen several posts where people were going to pull the trigger and order these but despite requesting they provide hard numbers I've never seen any data.

 

So the silicon is rather old and unless they were under $50US shipped or so I'd say that someone would be better off taking those funds are saving them towards a 1660Ti at 10.87TFLOPs

I would think so, after all I can't believe that I would be a rare case on anything, and I started folding again because Covid-19 + Wan Show. Didn't even join the prize event. Just folding. For LTT team. Because why not?

LOL, as the EVGA promotion got to be so ludicrous with the hardware I am running at present, I was merely giving away WUs.

So, decided to give WUs to the King of Drops team.

 

If I get a steam key it would be fun, but really not why I switched over either.

I grabbed a P106-100 for $90 shipped recently and that was the cheapest I could find. It's going to be in a dedicated GPU only folding rig in the basement where noise and temps aren't a concern. I looked at 1660 or 1650 but the prices were above what I was willing to spend and if I'm buying a GPU with video outputs that I can use for something else I KNOW it won't end up staying in the folding rig and then that defeats the purpose of that!

 

I looked into getting a used Tesla card but those prices are still absurdly high. Even the older Grid K1 is still above $200 but the specs don't look awful for the wattage used...right? Ooo there's a few for under $200. Bad deal?

Can't speak to those either but the over-clockers spreadsheet might have them but you'd have to scale for differences between Core 21 and 22

 

Edit - my preference is to buy new cards with a robust cooling system and a good warranty.

I managed a million points during the event, despite having pretty old, medium-end hardware. Too bad signups for the event ended about four hours before I discovered this thread and found out we had to sign up in advance. I still think LMG should have a special give-away for the person who happens to run the 10 Millionth WU.

 

I also spun up a disused computer to fold with 23 (very slow) Xeon cores, though sadly its Quadro card couldn't cut the mustard. More importantly I got my wife and maybe one or two other people to join in, though they probably didn't join the LTT team.
