LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

I just checked the team stats and we're in first place! Woot!

I also clocked over a million points... I think. On the webviewer it says I'm at 887,075 points but when I look up my donor stats it says I'm at 1,340,787 credit. Not sure which is which...

System Specs: Second-class potato, slightly mouldy

well bender got his 3rd over haul in as many days lol

First the new case then the new PSU and now he has 4x140MM Corsair Maglev intake fans (Got them due to the higher static pressure than the noctua 140MM) and dam when you turn the computer on the side pannel bows out a Hair and you can feel the heat coming from the graphics card slots now...and they dropped 4-5 c a peace with only adding 2x additional maglev fans for a total of 4.  due to the high peessure i will be leaving my tan Exaust noctua in place as no need for the 2000RPM fan now.

looking forward to an overhaul here on both systems when event is over.

Primary system just needs dust filters cleaned, CPU heatsink re-pasted (have considered thermal pads) and whole thing blown out and dust free.

(most important) Secondary/work system will be going in an actual mATX to mid sized case with 140mm noctua fans for airflow, with a big legit PSU so I can beat the hell out of that CPU/GPU from a cooling and power standpoint.  It is in a mini-itx form factor with so little airflow you can either push the CPU or GPU but if you push both temps start to get a little toasty;  also with real airflow and some space in the case they would both drop 10 C instantly.  Cant wait to meshify that thing.  That will be the 24/7 folder from here on out.

I came home from work and everything that was left on and folding is still on and folding, that's a good thing. I have stats for every check in on EOC, also a good thing. The weather has turned colder out so 'free' heat once again. I need to put some basement space aside to setup some boxes for folding down there when the warm weather returns, which means I need to clean up some clutter over the 'computer junk' corner of the basement before I can do that. But before I can do anything I need to get a good nights sleep so I'm not clumsy and breaking things on accident.

Seems I possibly should have chosen something ever so slightly faster than Intel Broadwell as I am seeing what appears to be some slight bottlenecking on the VM feeding the GPUs.

I suspect though the time it would take me to re-provision the VM would easily lose more points than this is doing.

Depends on how long you plan on running this and how much it's bottlenecking.

Heck, it may only be FAHControl that is causing those dips or even running nvidia-smi itself?

I also tend to blow out my computers 3 to 4 times a year especially when folding. May even do it five or six times a year when folding. Mostly after spring in after fall as I have the windows open a lot when the temps and humidity are reasonable to save if I’m air-conditioning.

With my Silverstone super-fine mesh dust filters I find I have to clean those about every 2-3 months regardless because they are so fine mesh or else airflow starts dying.  Upside is the fans on the clean side of the filters never need cleaning, though I touch them up with a duster with the rest of the PC about twice a year to be sure. Some ash fine dust comes off but nothing that affects running of the thing.  Thermal pads are a good option for long-term high-heat never-remove-the-heatsink operation. Almost as good as high quality paste but not quite, though they never age out like paste.

Well I have been seeing a lot of cloud instance talk going on here, and that's about as close as you get to "pocket supercomputer" these days, though I doubt your wallet is that big. The extra big wallet upgrade doesn't hold that much cloud instance dosh.

I'm not even sure it's possible to get 400 billion points in a single day with every computer on earth. Right now all of FAH is 28 billion per day. Also a missed a few zeros on the today column, woops.

Nah man.  He just bought a slice of deployment time from the cryptojacker malware folks.  3/4 of the world's businesses are now folding for lead!
