LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Recommended Posts

Not sure how relevant this is for the hardcore folding guys, but if you are a newbie to this (like me) - it seems like the Folding client does NOT like overclocking on my GPU (Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC). I use MSI Afterburner and everything in games and rendering otherwise works perfectly, so the OC is fine itself.

I turned all specs back to basic (core clock and memory clock) since it gave me repeating errors every 2-3% completion progress in the log until the WU was declared unuseable and was dropped -----> (21:18:10:WU01:FS01:0x22:Bad State detected... attempting to resume from last good checkpoint. Is your system overclocked?)

So, if you experience these errors, disable your OC and see if the next WU on your GPU is working properly. Currently waiting for a new one, will report if turning OC definitely fixed it.

Unfortunately I'm still waiting to hear if I've been approved for disability, that means I do have to worry about the bill.
The 970 is in and it's not too far off from what the Rad VII was doing itsell, I'll let this one go for awhile.

Ohhhhh ok! Thats one of the few arguments that beat going full power 24/7! best luck on getting approved!

YAS!

Speaking for my experience with loads of team red cards: Even if you do and it doesn't crash you wont notice much PPD improvement. Better way is to try to undervolt and play with the power targets! On some cards this will get you same or close to same PPD for reduced power/heat/cost

Many of us long term folders have spent hours dialling in overclocks and/or power-limiting to max our production or our efficiency. You can OC but it's not as simple as gaming.

If the description is correct, I'm working on a CPU coronavirus project right now. My CPU is a 9900K at 5GHz so it could be seen as one of the higher performance ones available.

Does annyone know how much cores are ok on those projects? Might have to split up my 3900x. That noporbelmo since running everything in a docker

Would you suggest for a newbie at folding to try work on the OC until its stable for folding at least for the event time? Or is the outcome so minimal that it won't matter enough for the event?

For me during the event I'm just going to be wacking my power limit to max, voltage up 30% and then aim for around 2100mhz on the core, this is for a GTX 1080. It's up to you really, you have plenty time to play with it BUT the increase in PPD isn't massive. So it's up to you really.

Honestly Spec’s advice is probably best. The new Core22 is much more power hungry and much more sensitive to overclocks than the older Core21 is so an overclock that may still work for Core21 could cause failures under Core22.

I’m just running everything at stock. I haven’t even increased my power limits on any cards.

During a contest or during this time of need is not the time to be attempting to dial in an overclock and doing so with Work Units that are in progress will add delay to the next generation of WUs for that project as any failed WUs will have to be reassigned for someone else to complete.

This!

I don't add anything to the core OC wise, it's just what my card boosts too with the higher power limit and voltage. I should have added that to my original advice.

TLDR, let GPU boost do its thing and if you really feel the need just give er more power and see if it offers any production benefit, if not, just leave it at stock.

I have finished the new GPU WU with only Power and Temp maxed out, it worked perfectly fine. Oh, and my room got noticeably warmer and its quite noisy :D. GPU is constantly at 59C (i set my fan curve so agressive that the GPU won't go over 60C).

I have not touched core voltage as its grey'ed out anyway in MSI  Afterburner and i have not yet had the courage to try fiddle with more then just core and memory.

Just co-opted youngest kids gaming system as they’re away for March Break. Still had Linux on a separate boot partition so just pointed at that then started it up and added a 2600x and a 1060 6GB to the fold.

so far:

9 x 14328-29 CPU WUs

1 x 14530-31 CPU WU

129 x 11741-52 GPU WUs

All I’ve got is a not so great 4770k and an rx580.  Is this enough to be helpful?

The other guys are correct, but form my perspective I dont see the value in adding voltage for F@H. Yeha it might yield a bit more... but we also have to keep efficiency in mind. Thats why I also max out the power target and let it boost as it needs and wants to.

YES! everything helps and a 580 is pretty ok with around 300-400PPD (Guessing and based on the GPU database)

I have added some requirements, these are higher than we have seen before for a folding event but I want you all to push hard. They are still quite low and a GTX 750 or a GT 1030 alternatively for team red a HD 7950, R9 270 or RX 460 should be able to hit them without much trouble.

If we dont idd do one.

Got some time on my hands due to not working and my social live basically being canceled  lol
