LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Not at this latitude - it's 6°C outside right now and the furnace isn't running. It will be interesting to check the household baseline on April 11th with all the PCs off - I suspect the four PCs are not actually consuming 2kW. Although, I have directly measured the FX8350 / 390X system (excluding monitor) consuming 474 watts running Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Measured the same way, the 3800X / 2080 Super consumes 383 watts.

Is your comparison to the year before?

Could it not be due to the lockdown making you guys use more appliances?

The difference between CPU and GPU for folding is crazy. I'm going to look for a used Vega 56/64 to throw into my nas, lol. I'm sure the A8-5600k will be a bottleneck tough 😂

I switched from OSX to Windows to get the gpu to fold. Now I'm wondering if using my Linux partition will produce better or worse results.

Amazingly Dirt and the Division 2 had no problems running. At least with the CPU folding. I just started GPU folding and haven't had a chance to fire up a game yet.

@ObeliskAG

So some quick maths, I saw that you were using the software readour for power consumption... Don't. It bases it's readout on a variety of values, and some are best guesses.

Taking your two systems I get a rough average of 428W, To make it simple we will round this down to 425.

425*4= 1700W, then if you add your usual baseload of 400 you get to 2.1Kw.

Looking at your readout there, 2.0Kw-2.3Kw seems about round where your consumption is.

So think it is pretty much bob on, you are just using a bad metric to base your estimates on IMO?

I have played ALOT of Doom Eternal while folding LOL. That game is insanely well optimized, but I do take a hit from 100fps locked on UWQHD, to around 80fps. But nothing I can't gain back with a little tweaking.

The house has a "smart" electrical meter and we have a wireless energy monitor that connects to the smart meter via ZigBee. Accepting the limits of the sampling rate, it appears to be very accurate. I've compared consumption measurements of a "Kill-A-Watt" style monitor with the whole house meter when turning a load on and off, and they match.

Usually, in the middle of the night, with no 'fridge, freezer, furnace, or other appliances running, the house consumes 356 to about 398 watts. This is appliances in standby, battery chargers, LED night lights, two Synology NAS devices, Cisco 2960X-24TD-L switch, Asus router, modem, AllStar radio repeater, with a UPS for the network and NAS and a UPS for the radio repeater. Since leaving the four desktop PCs on 24/7 to fold, baseline consumption in the middle of the night appears to be 2.4kW.

My GPU WU request times are slowly creeping up though, up to 10 minutes on the last one. Wouldn't it be amazing if we process everything they have?

Of course its giving my poor GTX 670 the chonker WU's, I think F@H is out for blood!

Here's a thought, since as far as i can tell FAH doesn't much care for VRAM whatsoever, would it be possible to buy up a card with faulty VRAM, downclock it all the way to keep it stable, and use it as a secondary folding card?

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Nope, it does use the VRAM as a local cach, and actually even though the volume of VRAM used since Core_22 is still relatively low, it pings it at stupid rates these days

Darn...

I did find these cards, which would make great secondary folding cards since all the damage is physical or non-critical (faulty display out ports). https://www.ebay.com/itm/GIGABYTE-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1070-G1-8GB-GDDR5-Graphics-Card-GV-N1070G1/303468573801?epid=14030519147&hash=item46a822f469%3Ag%3AARIAAOSwr05eNKJE&LH_ItemCondition=7000#viTabs_0

There is a lot to this.

Many people are home not realizing that running TV, lights, heat, appliances, opening and closing the fridge/freezer etc. all day is not normal for their electric bill and adds up fast.

I know many people leaving a TV or two running the news at more less all times... if they are older or big that can be 2-600watts right there.

Exactly,

My only TV pulls about 230Watts, older style, the speakers playing use more power, the kettle being used more often, oven more often, fridge as you said, lights, PC monitor, laptop, speakers on my PC playing music or the news, ect.

I don't think many people realise just how much their passive things use sometimes.
