What is it like to have an old rig?

Well, it is an unforgettable experience for me. First of all, my system needs around 15 tries before it can get a package to fold (as there are few packages that are suitable for the system). Once it has downloaded the package, it can only run at the rate of 3900 PPD maximum. Although i have my rig running 24/7 but for the last week, it managed to fold only 5 packages.

P/s: I'm using an ASUS laptop with a core i3 3217U and 4 gig of ram

I have my dell inspiron 17r se 7720 with a dead vga card folding nonstop for 5 days already, it does around 8-9k ppd. I'm gonna let thing run till it ded. Dw abt ppd. every fold is good fold. However, my eee pc 1201 on the 2nd is too slow to even open a web browser,  i just let it rip.

failing to send the work unit doesn't negatively impact your QRB eligibility. That's something that does NOT need to get started.

I repeat. Failing to SEND the work unit will not negatively impact your QRB eligibility. What it does do is remove points because the server has yet to receive the work. It works by starting a timer when the WU is completely downloaded, length of timer depends on the work unit and is PREDETERMINED (in advanced client, you have the Assigned, Timeout, and Expiration lines, those are what the timer is). If you timeout on a work unit or drop the work unit, that will negatively impact your eligibility for QRB.

Drop the Ryzen down to a 4 core if you don't already have it - one core (NOT Hyperthreaded core, real one) per GPU is plenty and that lets you upgrade the machine to 3 or 4 GPUs eventually.

Most of my folding systems run either an AMD A10 (commonly the 7860K) or an overkill FX-6xxxx/FX-8xxx series CPU (I used to mine Monero on those).

2080 cards seem to be the current sweet spot on PPD/$ and PPD/watt - and leaves you more space for future expansion.

I like the EVGA B2/G2/T2 series but do NOT like the longevity on the fan on their non-ball-bearing models (which I think includes the BQ/GQ series) while the newer BA/GA series seem to be having some teething pains right now.

Seasonic X or SS series are also good choices, but the X series is no longer made and I think they also discontinued the SS series. Their Prime and Focus series are non-BB stuff.

I used to list EVGA as my go-to card maker on the Nvidia side, but their move in their 2xxx generation to "fancy name sleeve bearing fan" usage has dropped them off my list entirely.

Gigabyte Aorus series is currently top of my list on the NVidia side, though I have OFTEN wished Sapphire would start making Nvidia based cards not just AMD based ones.

RUN LINUX.

It is a little more efficient even on single-GPU machines, and if you have to start using 1X slots for expansion it takes a VERY SMALL performance hit compared to running Windows (ANY version).

All of my folding machines have been running Ubuntu for years, but Debian or Mint work just as well by report and any Linux distribution you can get the needed libraries and NVidia drives working on should also work.

I recommend against Slackware, getting it working is a NIGHTMARE at best due to the lack of a good package management tool like apt / dpkg.

I have no case recommendation, as none of my current rigs use a case - on the other hand, they are NOT child or cat safe so I don't recommend them for everyone.

2x RTX 2060 > RTX 2080. Both PPD and cost efficiency. 51 % more PPD compared to a single 2080. Anyone here can confirm dual 2060 is much better for folding. Even factoring in the power consumption difference of 2 years of 24/7 folding. Only RTX 2080 SUPER and RTX 2080 Ti configs are worse than a RTX 2080 for cost efficiency.

Is anyone else getting Could not get Assignment repeatedly this morning? I have an aprox 2.5million PPD Folding power but cant seem to ever really utilize that.because of the lack of work Work Units? Or Are they still having Server Bandwidth Issues?

Guys, it is normal that after setting the client-type to advanced, completing a WU, the log didn't report the number of points? He just said Work-ACK(400) and started a new WU. Is there something wrong or it is just how it works?

Just a heads up, 200 series cards aren't supported in the current version of F@H so it won't be assigned any work units. A sad reality I found out yesterday trying to get some use out of some old GT240s I had lying around. Oh well, still managed to spin up a couple Piledriver machines.

Hot damn, I broke into the 2000's rank overnight.  Still, of course I opened HFM to see 75% of my slots idle lol.

R5 3600, 5700 XT, AX370 K7...  and that's plenty for me.  If you ignore the masses of other parts I occasionally put together and laugh about.

How do I set my Client to request 'Big WUs'? The configuration guide doesnt have the specifics for the switch.

Is it just 'client-type v=bigadv'?

also you can set the percentage download the same way.  for cpu and gpu

type--

name=next-unit-percent   v=99(or which ever value works for you)

This website has some somewhat optimistic ppd numbers for a bunch of GPUs:

https://www.overclock.net/forum/55-overclock-net-folding-home-team/475163-gpu-projects-ppd-database.html

I believe @Gorgon said that it is useful for determining relative performance, so a 980ti should be twice as fast as a 780ti.

Looking overclock.net folding gpu chart.

The 980ti is more powerful than two 780ti's and should use same amount of power than single 780ti.

If I had to vote on these to option I would say 980ti
