Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Hmm that seems like a low PPD, need to get round to testing out my CPUs from the generation. I did fold on that generation of CPU last year but I never bothered to check the PPD on them, really should of.

As far as I know, there isn't a way around this. I had the same problem a couple of years ago, and found out 385.69 is the latest driver where you can have a modded bios. (Nvidia patched this in 387.92) However if I'am not mistaken you can flash a different bios from a higher clocking card with a same PCB (theoretically, but it's a dangerous game and very likely you brick your graphics card). You can see a list Here on page 16 for 980TI and what PCB they have. For folding I would just leave it on the old driver, or flash the stock bios and update to a newer driver.

Yeah i think i'm gonna flash back to stock and add another 980ti to fold until they found a cure.

Here are some settings to get the work units more fluent....it tries downloading before the current WU is finished....you can go down up to 90.

Hmm seems my old i5 3570k with 660ti isn't producing much ppd now, gone from 120k plus avg to 1500 for the whole of yesterday. Got a 15day run for the cpu  just downloaded 347ppd giving 5500 total, lol. Is it worth running? 🥵

from my experience the past day setting the client-type to advanced yields an uninterrupted stream of gpu WUs though they are at times less rewarding in terms of ppd. ive kept 15 gpus busy non stop for about 21h now (without micromanaging). though i lost a couple of WUs due to crashes

That's interesting , mine are just running default as i don't like touching settings without knowing what i'm doing thoroughly. I will look into it see if makes a difference to mine thanks for the input.

the TL;DR is to allow for less stable, less well tested WUs
Ive seen it called a "public late-stage beta" a couple of times

Ok, so did some reading up on the config guide page and understand the change to client-type and advanced bit, so have changed that, do i also have to add anything to the core option as illustrated in config guide or I assume i leave that alone? As reading further in the guide seems to require written commands and taking me down the proverbial rabbit hole, so i would rather leave that to the experts.

Looking for some advice here... I'm running an Nvidia Quadro RTX8000, and I feel like it should be doing better than it is. It can knock out an advanced work unit in about 1.5 hours in current configuration. Estimated points are around 200k per work unit, after being turned in. One of the problems i'm seeing is that I typically only receive around 95k per work unit, according to the extreme overclocking stats page.

Are there any settings I can tweak to increase performance to hopefully increase the actual points per work unit?

Thanks!

Seeing as how I have a very invested interest in Covid-19 I think I need to get a bit more skin in the game. I've already put a second GUP in my current system and I've set a budget of around £1,000 to build a system to fold 24/7. I'm trying to keep costs to put most into GPU power so far I'm at around £400 -

Ryzen 7 2700
Asus ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING ATX
Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400
EVGA BQ 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

So the question is what would give me the best bang for the bucks to crunch the most WU's ? The cost works out about the same for -

1 x MSI GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB VENTUS OC
or
2 x EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB KO ULTRA GAMING

Or something else I've not thought about that stays in the buget of round £600 for GPU

Also need a cheap case with good airflow any ideas ?

Drop the Ryzen down to a 4 core if you don't already have it - one core (NOT Hyperthreaded core, real one) per GPU is plenty and that lets you upgrade the machine to 3 or 4 GPUs eventually.

Most of my folding systems run either an AMD A10 (commonly the 7860K) or an overkill FX-6xxxx/FX-8xxx series CPU (I used to mine Monero on those).

2080 cards seem to be the current sweet spot on PPD/$ and PPD/watt - and leaves you more space for future expansion.

I like the EVGA B2/G2/T2 series but do NOT like the longevity on the fan on their non-ball-bearing models (which I think includes the BQ/GQ series) while the newer BA/GA series seem to be having some teething pains right now.

Seasonic X or SS series are also good choices, but the X series is no longer made and I think they also discontinued the SS series. Their Prime and Focus series are non-BB stuff.

I used to list EVGA as my go-to card maker on the Nvidia side, but their move in their 2xxx generation to "fancy name sleeve bearing fan" usage has dropped them off my list entirely.

Gigabyte Aorus series is currently top of my list on the NVidia side, though I have OFTEN wished Sapphire would start making Nvidia based cards not just AMD based ones.

RUN LINUX.

It is a little more efficient even on single-GPU machines, and if you have to start using 1X slots for expansion it takes a VERY SMALL performance hit compared to running Windows (ANY version).

All of my folding machines have been running Ubuntu for years, but Debian or Mint work just as well by report and any Linux distribution you can get the needed libraries and NVidia drives working on should also work.

I recommend against Slackware, getting it working is a NIGHTMARE at best due to the lack of a good package management tool like apt / dpkg.

I have no case recommendation, as none of my current rigs use a case - on the other hand, they are NOT child or cat safe so I don't recommend them for everyone.

Nope, client level is enough and works for all slots. You could do it at slot level if you only wanted said slots to use advanced but not others.
