LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Well...  I have a 7970 Dual-X and a Vega 56 AirBoost.  I'm running both as folding units, but no reason I need to be.  Hell, I'm not even registered for this competition.  Would one be useful for you?  I need one for 4k output to my TV, but you're welcome to one.

Well! Was taking some time to properly re-check the specs of my two "biggest" machine and will send you a PM :)

I took sometime off after sleeping to play a couple games, hope it doesn't hurt my PPD too much but it was only halo CE so can't imagine it all that taxing on my GPU.

I think at least in my case, I need a few threads...I have a 6c/12t  CPU and reserved only 1 thread for a RX 5700 and my GPU maxed out at 80%

That doesn't mean anything, I currently have a WU that only uses 84% even if nothing else is running. Some can't use all possible available resources, likely some parts of the job have to wait on other stuff to be done before continuing etc.

When I said "I have a very invested interest in Covid-19" I really ment it.

I'm a cancer patient. In the last 2 1/2 years I've had my right lung removed, done 4 months of chemo, had neurosurgery to remove a brain tumor, and had 2 lots of radiotherapy ( the latest being last Wednesday). If I get Covid-19 I'll be lucky to make it 2 weeks.

With that said this system will only ever be used for folding, if I make past Covid-19 I'll switch it over to cancer research, It's never  going to be a gaming rig.

My thinking behind the R7 is R7 2700 and R5 3600 are near enough the same price I can have the R7 run 14 cores (leaving 2 core to keep everything else happy) and the CPU WU's have to be done and every bit will help.

Power draw I'm not too bothered about if it means I can get more WU's done in the same time I don't mind a slightly higher power bill. My whole idea is to crunch as many WU's as I can with the budget I have.

Also I would like to personally thank everyone of you for spending your time, effort and resources to help out people in a position like mine.

in that case the R7 would be best. and best of luck to you.  i would also look at a Noctua cooler for the CPU as the included ones aren't the best.

You could try reserving more threads but it could also be overheat issue and your 5700 clocking itself down when both CPU and GPU is under full load. Just a shot in the dark really. Check the clock speed and temps with MSI afterburner.

I thought that too, but my GPU temps max out at around 75C...

I saw where another poster suggested editing the config file...that is a bit too complicated and I don't want to risk fudging it up...

It's already been a couple of days that it didn't get a task. I tried your tip but it didn't help. Tnx for helping

just keep on trying... once I needed around 45 attempts but mostly 4-5 attempts. Its just random luck to find a free resource slot on the server.

Its getting way better since they are ramping up server capacity. Will be doubled soon...

I give you a bit of slack for a while though... since I have to tear down my other pc... taking 1080Ti out, putting 2080 Seahawk in... but 1080Ti is getting it´s new home with i7 2600K (LUL I found out that from some cardboard box yesterday)... and bought a wifi card. Going to locate that third pc to my balcony at 2 Celsius climate...

Theres 1 simple thing that could make a tremendous improvement already without even modifying the backend:

Having a pooled queue of WU to draw from instead of each FS having its own damn queue

Ik there are limitations to that but still... In general better queue management would be nice but i guess that would be too exploitable? meh its not like one cant manipulate the queue already if one tries

A centralized server keeping track of what has what and round-robin distributing based on # of jobs and capacity? "server #3 has an open slot and this job go ask for it"
